From what I can tell, it wasn’t that McManus was held back from developing the kind of Kai you wanted to see. Indeed, judging from the accounts I’ve heard, he wanted Kai to stay as dead as possible.
If the gist of the show for you was the Xev/Kai relationship, then you were bound to be disappointed, as the show was never really about that to begin with. Sorry you were disappointed.
