Apologies to the US peeps

Dalektek790, I don’t say ‘the states’ because I want to sound American, the English accent is far too defined to mimic any other nationality.
I like the people in US, doesn’t mean I’m going to start speaking in their accent, I couldn’t do it even if I wanted to, as an American (and Englishman) would pick it off as false straight away.
To some in the UK, I sound like a farmer, and to me they sound the same way, even though I hail from the city that is England’s seat of learning…Oxford.
If you think ‘the states’ is not the correct term, then maybe you can advise me what is?
Anyway, most of my friends from my ‘Uni’ days were American, and they never took exception to the way I spoke about their homeland.
