[i]Gremlins[/i], no. It was a large, mainstream success, and has too large a fan base to qualify as “cult.” Its self-referential humor and spoofy nature gives it a connection to many cult films, though, primarily because its director (Joe Dante) has helmed a number of cult favorites himself. [i]The Howling, Piranha,[/i] and [i]Hollywood Boulevard[/i] are all good examples of this, and were all done by Dante. [i]Gremlins[/i], though, is one of the few times he broke through to a mainstream market, and therefore isn’t a “cult” film.
