MP3 is a kind of compression that allows huge music files to be compressed to a smaller form, without significantly losing quality. It’s becoming kind of an industry standard, in that just about any music file you download from anywhere (a web page, Napster, etc.) is going to be encoded as an MP3. Napster is just an efficient way for people to get their hands on MP3 files. So, in effect, MP3 and Napster are synonymous, but Napster isn’t the only place you can get MP3s. F’rinstance, the “Brigadoom” songs on the LEXX Archive are MP3s.
