I’m doing pretty well, thanks Mandara. My kids keep me grounded.
Actually, I’ve been watching Doctor Who, but have found it forgettable enough to forget to mention it. Not bad, though. I did watch last season’s BSG. I stay away from, and don’t care about, the “BS” golly-gee politics so that I can just focus on the show. It could be better, but for me it’s worth watching. I really don’t care for the excessive use of flashbacks and other devices in the show, however.
The Riches (with Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver) is definitely more my cup of tea. It’s my favourite show in quite a long time, in fact. http://fxnetworks.com/shows/originals/theriches/
Back to music: Perhaps I shouldn’t mention this, but I got an advance release of an album that will be coming out in October, and it is great. Well, great for me, anyway. Okay, it was leaked and normally I would wait, but as I wasn’t searching it out… Robert Wyatt is one of my favourite artists – from his 1960’s Soft Machine days to Matching Mole (so-called Canterbury scene music) to his “solo” work. The album of his that really got me hooked was Rock Bottom from ’74, which is terrific and particularly poignant as he made it during a very low point of his life after falling from a window and becoming a paraplegic. I think of Rock Bottom as a real triumph.
He’s continues to make albums that I enjoy: Shleep from 1997 and Cuckooland from 2003 are worth mentioning, but I really like his as yet unreleased (unofficially) album, Comicopera. Very good! I will definitely be buying it when it comes out, and it should have one more track I believe (and might be tweaked a bit). It’s nice and mellow, jazzy, folksy, bluesy, and pretty eclectic with an intimate sound. Definitely more toned down/ layed back than the music in my last post.
Here’s a Robert Wyatt myspace page (with several songs) for those who are unfamiliar with his work and are interested in checking out some of his music (and videos): CLICK
Sea Song (Wyatt – from Rock Bottom)
“You look different every time you come
From the foam-crested brine
Your skin shining softly in the moonlight
Partly fish, partly porpoise, partly baby sperm whale
Am I yours? Are you mine to play with?
Joking apart – when you’re drunk you’re terrific when you’re drunk
I like you mostly late at night you’re quite alright
But I can’t understand the different you in the morning
When it’s time to play at being human for a while please smile!
You’ll be different in the spring, I know
You’re a seasonal beast like the starfish that drift in with the tide
So until your your blood runs to meet the next full moon
You’re madness fits in nicely with my own
Your lunacy fits neatly with my own, my very own
We’re not alone”
Anyway, I’m just checking out Buckethead’s official site now. Of course I’m kind of familiar with them (as I love much experimental rock and they are sometimes labeled that), but not that familiar with the music (been ages since I last heard any Buckethead).
