The Other Zone, as described in the Game was a failed universe with apparent psychoactive properties.
Those scenes were shot in Iceland, not in studio. Paul Donovan, Nigel Bennet and Michael McManus travelled there over a long weekend in July. They hired a local cameraman, focus puller and sound technician, and then they spent the weekend tromping all over volcanic slopes and glaciers picking up shots. Obviously, the minimal technical crew had to carry their own gear, so McManus and Bennet were stuck lugging the heavy chessbox, table and chairs all over. Apparently, at the end, Paul shot footage of the two of them trashing the box.
