Interesting. . . it makes a lot of sense. But remember the undead dragon (I forget what book, Men at Arms perhaps?) didn’t seem to know anything about that and with him knowing so much about family heratige and his being undead and his immense intelligence, it would seem to be something he would figure out. But you never know, Carrot’s naivety could be his best protection.

P.S. When is it said that the last king was a werewolf? I don’t remember that one. (Its in the Fifth Elephant isn’t it, if it is that explains a lot. I can’t remember much of that book at all.)

I was reading The Fifth Elephant and I had a Pratchettian thought. Perhaps, I thought in the twisted depths of my sub-conscious, perhaps Capt. Carrot is, in fact, a werewolf, or more specifically a yennork (a werewolf that doesn’t change). I know you’re thinking it doesn’t make sense, but hear me out. The last king of Ankh-Morpork, the one killed by Stoneface Vimes, was a werewolf. That makes it possible for Carrot to be both a werewolf and the rightful ruler. His confidence and ability to get along with people spring from the werewolf arrogance in his ancestry. His father, a werewolf, was chased out of wherever he was living – because he was a werewolf – and was involved in a cart accident. His son was found and taken in by dwarfs, who never realised that he was a yennork. And the rest is history. He gets along so well with Angua because they have something in common. Oh, and Angua doesn’t realise the truth because the werewolf smell is covered by the scent of armour polish.
Oh boy oh boy, I’ve created my own little piece of Discworld…
So, geezers, what do you think?

Okay, there’s something weird going on here: I posted to this thread to refute the theory and my post vanished. I didn’t screw up so where’s it gone?

Edit to add: Hmmm, well this one is here. I think you are wrong: Carrott is likeable because of a freaky genetic king thing and I don’t remember the last king being a werewolf either.

First and foremost, the whole ‘last king being a werewolf’ thing is a part of my theory. It’s never actually mentioned anywhere. Secondly, the theory is a result of too much coffee, so I’m not surprised that there are a few holes in it. Thirdly, Dragon King At Arms (undead dragon) probably wouldn’t know much about it because it’s been hidden. I mean, a werewolf king? That would be a scandal, even by Ankh-Morpork standards.
Oh, don’t expect me to make any sense. I’m only lucid in exceptional circumstances.

Ok, whats all this then!?! I have read a lot of Pratchet (love his stuff!) but I’m at a loss here. Where is Stoneface Vimes mentioned? (what book?)
I think of Carrot as a Braveheart type person, noble to the bone. He has to do the Right Thing! He cant do anything else! He fell in love with Angua because it was the right thing to do. Even when he went back to buary(?) Gavin. The man is to good too be true. Long live Diskworld!!!!

I think the king that Stoneface Vimes killed was King Lorenzo the Kind. Can’t remember what book it was mentioned in, possibly Men at Arms? I believe it was the one where Lord Vetinari was being poisoned. What I remember being mentioned about King Lorenzo was that “he liked children”, apparently in some horrible way, which is one of the reasons Vimes beheaded him.

Pratchett is a god!
