ParticipantAs we have al heard, the story is about a super computer that goes crazy and turns everybody in to Zombies and millitary trying to clean it up!
Well, that made me feal like the movie would not me a good one!
But that was before I found this at:
http://www.resident-evil-forum.com/english/index.php3:Spoilers:
“The main source of evil in the film is a nine foot tall mutant with half it’s brain exposed and a long animatronic tongue. The STARS team are stalked through the whole film by this thing. It just gets bigger and bigger. Plot? Yeah, well, there’s this super computer called Red Queen. It activates all the emergency systems. I shouldn’t really tell you this, but the bad guy steals a vial of the T-Virus and tosses it into the base. The halon systems come on. The oxygen disappears. Everyone in the base dies, but is then brought back to life through the virus”. The film’s executive producer, Robert Kultzer says the film has a slow buildup like the first game – “Ultimately, our characters end up trapped half a mile underground. They have one gun, a spare magazine, and 526 zombies, so there’s no way they can blast their way out. They have to be smart.”
“During NextGen’s visit to the set they talked briefly with writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson. Anderson reiterates the idea of the film being a prequel to the game saying, “This takes place several months before the first Resident Evil game. The Umbrella Corporation is still the villain and we’ll use a lot of the same creatures.” Anderson sets up the story saying, “Milla plays Alice, a caretaker in the mansion above Umbrella’s underground base. In an early scene she’s taking a shower and is knocked out by nerve gas. This causes her to lose her memory, and during the film she gets flashbacks at stressful moments. The gas was triggered by the Red Queen, which controls all the systems within the base, and the STARS team are called in to investigate.” Just what does Anderson think of the criticism being hurled at him by purists that want the game’s story better reflected in the film? He says, “The acting in the first Resident Evil was the worst, and the dialogue was really bad. When Capcom does a new game they don’t go, ‘Right, we’re going to redo Resident Evil 1.’ I speak as a gamer: If all I’m seeing from the movie is the first game, with all the bad dialogue transposed onto film, that’s not a very good film. Why would I want to pay nine bucks to see that?”

:Spoilers End:
That changes things! Maybe the movie will be good after al!
They are updateing the info when they get it so check for more later!

ParticipantI don’t believe few people talked about this movie. It rocked! I saw it in the theater and was blown away. My favorite zombie/survival-horror movie used to be the original Night of the Living Dead. But after seeing Resident Evil, it is now my favorite. It is also my favorite movie adaptation from the videogame. I preordered the DVD before it was released on 30 July 2002.
Oh, I almost forgot. You get to see Milla Jojovich’s shaved gash. Worth the price of admission alone!

Being a lifelong afficionado of the zombie genre, I’d have to agree. It’s short on the gore one would expect (except for a few nice effects, though I’d heard that a number of cuts were made to satisfy the MPAA), but a nice little claustrophobic sci-fi/horror flick.
By the way, Crusader, the site got the name wrong: the director is Paul W.S. Anderson, not Paul Thomas Anderson, who was the director of Boogie Nights, Magnolia and Hard Eight.
A rant on a related note: I thought the score of the film, done by Marilyn Manson, was absolutely great, and matched the tone of the film superbly. So, I went out to get the soundtrack (as I like to collect horror soundtracks as well), and saw that only a few bits of the score were included, with the bulk of the CD made up of lousy “songs inspired by the film”/”we licensed some songs from popular bands that weren’t good enough for them to put on an album” tracks. I *hate* the current trend of soundtracks being used as promotional tools for bands that aren’t even heard in the film in the first place!

GuestI totaly agree!
The music was great! Like taken derect out of Resident Evil 1! (Wich I think some where)Its really a great movie! And they way that they made it part of the games was really great! I cant wait for Resident Evil 2 when it comes! (Should be next year if we are lucky!)
Only one thing I dissliked about the movie! To much Kung fu! It kinda trashed things how easy she could kick down the Zombies!
But exept that it was great!
But ofcores nit was made by Videogame freeks so they had a real love for their work!7th September 2002 at 3:12 pm #43794Anonymous
GuestTHIS WAS BY FAR ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES I HAVE EVER SEEN! In fact, the only part of the movie that I didn’t like was the fact that it took but one shot or a good kick to the head to dispose of them zombies. Man, i wish my regular Res. Evil games were that easy.

GuestI just got it on DVD and it was worth it, one of the rare times that a game turned into a movie worked.
It could so easily have been a disaster, but it was actually better than the game and although the SFX lacked in parts it was very frightening and full of suspense.
The licker was a very nasty little beasty and a good bit of CGI, although the zombie dobermanns did not look convincing, they had just given real dogs a paint job and it showed.
But for a film’s first outing it was good fun and very scary, definitely deserves a sequel.

ParticipantYeah I liked it too. I did go and see it with the lowest of expectations though. I thought it was going to be another tomb raider but I had to go and see it and the cinema had air conditioning. The first few minutes of the film really blow me away.
I wasn’t expecting anything like that; it really felt like a horror movie. The rest of the film was a bit more along the lines I was expecting, lots of running around with guns and shouting, but the zombies looked good and the director kept it all moving along.
A few things got to me though.
Although the music was good through out the film the bit where the stars team get into the mansion, it just sounded like someone was having a fit. I really thought it was a joke and was waiting a pay off, a one liner of something.
The zombies looked good but they didn’t do much and there was no gore!
And what was up with the Vasquez character who was acting through her eyebrows for most of the film.[ 09-09-2002: Message edited by: warren ]

InactiveI wonder if there’ll be any complaints about ‘ground zero’ like there were about ‘the two towers’

That’s very close to the plot of the System Shock games.

GuestYeah it did first but it wasnt that simple when you finaly saw the movie!
Intresting facts:
1 They are working on the Sequel right now!
2 The actors that where Zombies had to twist their ancles and legs out so that they would look like the walking dead with twisted arms and legs! That wasnt computer animated! Paul whanted it to look real so the actors had to go through som painfull **** and get theire limbs twisted around and the worst thing must have bin to twist them back in place!
Talk about suffering for the art! 12th September 2002 at 2:38 am #43800Anonymous

Err… your kidding, right? No music in that film even came close to the music in Resident Evil. Have you even played the game?

GuestNot so much!
Just about 8 or 9 time! Played it just before I watched the movie and I really recognice some of the music! The strange and unnerving music not the rock’n’role thing! -
