Okay, here we go.
We’ve got in some of the supplemental materials from Salter, and they look pretty good. Firstly, we’ve got a “making of” docu on Season 2 (I believe it was originally b’cast on Space in Canada). It runs 24 mins, and since we’ve got so many episodes on each disc, we can only fit in so much supplemental material. So, Salter has edited it into chunks of 3 (which is where the commercial breaks were), so we can spread it out. Also, we have the Rated LEXX special from SciFi, which, again, Salter has edited into segments focusing on the specific characters, and we’ll have one segement per release. I wish we could have the whole thing on one, but that’s the way things have worked out.
I also saw the screens that Salter cooked up for some of the various menus (well, the scene indeces, anyway) and the character bios, and they look great. The main menu section is going to be a full-motion thing, with a pretty neat intro. Basically, it’s going to be like you are commanding the LEXX, with the menu in the viewscreen. It’s hard to explain, but it looks neat-o keen.
So, production is coming along nicely. There should also be some other supplements coming along, we’re just waiting for the word from Salter that they’re done.–Aleck
8th February 2001 at 1:19 pm #46858AnonymousGuestI can’t wait to see these, Aleck. They sound so kewl! That menu thing sounds neat, in a real Mystish kinda way. (Hey, maybe you guys can do “RealLexx! (subtitled: See the Universe, Destroy Planets and Maybe, Just Maybe, Get Lucky” ) Well, I’ll be savin’ my pennies while I wait for their release. You’re a gem, Aleck; thanks for keepin’ us posted.

Oh, they’ll definitely be released in the US. The company I work for, Acorn Media, has the US rights to them, and Koch will release them simultaneously in Canada.
And now, I think I can say without much doubt that we have a release date. Keep in mind that all dates are tentative, and can change depending on various factors, but we’re pretty sure on this…
May 29, 2001. The first 2 collections (4 episodes on each) will be released on VHS and DVD on this date, with releases following generally every 2 months. The 3rd through 5th sets’ release dates are much more tentative than the first two, so keep that in mind, but it should follow that basic guideline.
…But don’t bite my head off if the dates change, please! –Aleck

oh gawd… I hope that’s not where the meat pies have been coming from… FX, we really need to do something about the sanitation down here. Though, I must admit, these severed arms make great clubs for beating off the sewer rats…
As for the release dates… YIPPEE!!! That’s just about a week after my b-day. Cash rather than gifts works for me, that way I can buy a slew of them all at once. Do we know if the vids will have any nice interviews on them or is it DVD only?

Probably the only thing that falls into the “silly games” category is a trivia game thing, which unfortunately isn’t going to be a real brain-challenging thing. I was instructed to not make it *too* obscure so’s not to alienate newbies. There’ll probably be a trivia thing on each DVD release.
As for extras on the VHS releases, we are going to put the interview segments on the VHS tapes as well. At least that’s the last I heard from the VHS folks.

Individually. They won’t all be ready at once, and will come out in spurts. Two at first (May 29th), then ones following approx. every 2 months. I wouldn’t rule out all of them *at some time* becoming available as a boxed set, but as of now we don’t really have any plans to do it.

——————
“…we will be restoring normality just as soon as we are sure what normal is anyway.”19th February 2001 at 11:27 pm #46873AnonymousGuestOkay, 2 bits of bad news…
One, we won’t have a Thwack-a-Brain game, though I think it’s one of the best ideas I’ve heard for a game yet. Just think, it could start on the Cluster, where you have to defeat security guards, cluster lizards, and robotic drones. Then, on board the LEXX, you have to battle and defeat hordes of Mantrid drones, Aulk and Schlemmi, Giggerota, the Guleen clan et al (of course, you can find your way to other levels where you must defeat armies of undead Divine Predecessors like some mutant Resident Evil/House of the Dead thingie, sex-crazed monks, etc.). Finally, you work your way to the Hall of Brains and must destroy as many as possible (which ain’t really much of a challenge, since they just sit in their little pods–maybe you must fight off being possessed by Insect Essence). Anyway, sounds like a cool game, and it sucks that PlayStation hasn’t come out with it yet.Okay, so that wasn’t much of a bad news bit.
But, here’s a bit of bad news on my end, anyway. Salter is filming the cast/crew interviews (I think they did some at the end of last week, and will continue this week), and Xenia has refused to be interviewed. I don’t know why, as no real reason was given, so it could be that she couldn’t work it into her schedule or any number of other reasons. Other cast members have agreed to participate, and they look to be cool. The one I’m waiting for (and which should be on set 3, if things go as planned) is the interview with Jeffrey Hirschfield *in character*!!!! We’re getting an interview with the HEAD!!!! It’s all just *so* Max Headroom!
Anyway, just to keep y’all updated on what’s going on.

Thanks Trillian!!!!!
I passed along the results to the Powers That Be around here, and I’m still going to be pushing for some outtake stuff. It may not be available for the Season 2 stuff, but we’ll see what happens with the Season 3 releases. What surprised me is the number of people interested in costume development. I hadn’t really thought about that, and it might be something worth looking into.

1st March 2001 at 9:34 pm #46877AnonymousGuestOkay, just a slight update.
The DVDs are in the beginning stages of being authored. This involves a bunch of programming that I personally don’t understand a lick of, but the fine folks at Salter do, and are working on it as we speak. We received 2 test discs for the DVDs yesterday, and aside from some small programming errors, they seem to be coming along swell. The image quality on the episodes themselves is just great. From what I saw, anyway. The discs had truncated, 10-minute snips of each episode on them (just so we could tell how the links worked and all that). But they looked great, much better than the VHS screeners I’d looked at earlier, which were a revelation compared to my EP-recorded tapes from Sci Fi.
Because Xenia was unavailable for interview, she’s been replaced on the second disc with the other interview they had in the can. So, for the first release, there’s an interview with MM, and an interview with Paul Donovan on the second. MM’s interview is particularly cool. There are a few behind-the-scenes moments edited in, and he’s pretty relaxed and funny. I had no idea his hair was so long now, though. I had only seen some pics of him out of costume with kinda short-ish hair. But now his hair’s down past his shoulders. Paul Donovan’s interview covers a lot of the same territory that he’s covered before, about wanting to break free of the “typical” sci-fi trappings. He mentions “The Beverly Hillbillies” as an influence, though, and I was fairly shocked by that. I didn’t see that at *all*. Both are pretty good interviews.
But, okay, here’s my reason for posting all of this. I haven’t been to Halifax. Never visited the studios. Don’t know what it’s like there. I just have one question that’s been bugging me and everyone else who’s seen the Paul Donovan interview. Are the sets heated? All through the interview, he’s wearing a big bulky coat and a wool stocking cap. He looks like he oughta be camping out somewhere in the wilderness, not flming a TV show. It can’t be *that* cold in there!–Aleck

2nd March 2001 at 10:10 am #46879AnonymousGuestHey Aleck, glad to read the updates. Sorry to read about Xenia, though. She probably got tired of people askin’ her why she took Eva’s place. Pity, though, people really like her character. It would have been nice seeing her ‘off-screen,’ speaking about her adventures with the show. Anyway, I finally got a chance to see the IWHS DVD, the one released by Koch(?). Dude, they spelled Divine with an “e”. Ex-English teacher Lexx fans want to know, you guys are using spell check over at Acorn, right? Comparatively speaking, spelling aside, will the Acorn DVDs be much better or different? Okay, I know ya gotta say better, workin’ there and all, but how different? Well, regardless of perks and extras, I’ll still be getting them. IWHS was my first DVD experience and I couldn’t peel my eyes away from the screen! Now, I must have all of the series on DVD. Get crackin’ Acorn!

Better. Definitely better. There were several things that we weren’t exactly pleased about with the Season 1 DVDs, but it was one of (if not the very) first DVDs that Salter and Koch were involved in producing. There were problems with the “safe area” in the images (at least on our monitors, the left side of the bio pages went off the screen), the “devine” misspelling, those scene index buttons…anyway, I have been extremely pleased with the way that these DVDs are coming along. And not just because I work there.
They are definitely gonna be different. We’ll have a different full-motion intro to the main menu, the scene indeces will have a still from each chapter, there’s more of a variety of photos and interviews, the bios have been re-written, and we should have more supplemental stuff than the Season 1 discs. Not a whole lot more, but a bit.And hey, I’m crackin’ just as fast as I can!

You know, I’m glad you brought this up. I had the same problem with mine, and thought it might just be some hardware compatibility thing. The check discs we’ve been given don’t have track-times listed either, but they’re truncated and only contain 10 minutes of program (just to see how the on-screen functions go). I’ll inquire about this, as it bugged me as well.
As to the chapter question (I haven’t really used the chapter menu of Season 1, other than examining how they approached it in general), I’m unclear as to what you mean. The one thing that *really* bothered me about the Season 1 DVDs was the fact that the scene index was not numbered, and appeared to be almost randomly laid out on the screen (they really *aren’t*, I found out, but it looked kind of haphazard). What we’re doing as far as chaptering goes, is placing chapters either at the commercial break (where it fades to black and there’s a scene change), or where there is a significant scene change and a new element of the plot is introduced or expanded upon (and laid out at about 6-10 minute intervals). It’s a little more in-depth than a jump-to-a-scene thing, but a little more broad at the same time.Good observations. Let me know what you think.

‘As to the chapter question I’m unclear as to what you mean.’When you’re watching any DVD, and you hit the “next chapter” or “>>” button (whatever you want to call it), it should advance to the next chapter (essentially the same thing as tracks on a music CD). You actually see the # change (on the DVD screen) telling you which chapter # you’re on (it advances from chapter 1, to 2, 3, 4, etc. etc.).
On the Lexx DVDs, there are NO chapters (or rather, the whole movie is on one single chapter).
If you’re still not sure what I mean, pop in ANY movie DVD, and skip through a few chapters (the “>>” button), while you keep an eye on your DVD player screen. Then do it with one of the Lexx DVDs. You’ll see what I mean.

Aaaah. *That* I understand. I thought you meant something about how the DVD scene selection was set up. Thinking about it, this might have something to do with the fact that there is no track-time information displayed. I would hope not, but I’m going to check on this today. As to the track-time stuff that you mentioned yesterday, I spoke with the higher-ups around here (they have contact with the folks at Salter Digital), and it’s not something that we’ve ever had to worry about before (we don’t usually use Salter as our mastering source), and it is too late to change the situation if the first 2 DVDs are set up in the same way as the Season 1 discs. We’ve passed along the info to Salter, however, and if the first 2 discs have the same problem, we should be able to fix it by the next release. If not, then all for the better.
Again, thanks for sharing these problems with me. I’ll do my best to see that it won’t be the case with *all* of the releases, anyway.

It’s a little more in-depth than a jump-to-a-scene thing, but a little more broad at the same time.Good observations. Let me know what you think.

Aleck, I think it sounds like you guys are really striving to do a great job with these DVDs!
I have one question: Are the U.S. and Canadian versions going to be identical?
I would have pretty easy access to both versions, since I’m about 20 minutes from the Canadian border, and my girlfriend lives in Canada so I’m there often. That is, of course how I originally found out about the Lexx DVD’s… I was over in Windsor, Ontario with her, saw those DVD’s in a store…. and nearly had a heart attack! Thanks in advance for the info,

Thank you! We are, and it helps to have a rabid fan on the staff (I want to put out something that I’d be happy to buy if I weren’t involved).

Exactly identical. We here at Acorn are working together with Salter Digital to create the product, and Koch is distributing the same product in Canada in return for sharing in the production costs.

To follow up on this, I checked the test discs we have here, and you can, indeed, skip from one chapter to the next on the Season 2 discs. Don’t know how or why that happened with the first series, other than it was one of Salter’s first (if not their very first) DVD projects. But, it’s been cleared up now.
Hopefully, with the full sample discs we get in, the track-time thing will work. If not, as I said, we’ll try to get it worked out for the next 3 releases.–Aleck

6th April 2001 at 12:22 am #46896AnonymousGuestJust a quick update on the DVD front. Things are progressing nicely on this end. Got the test discs in, and there seem to be no major problems. As for the earlier concerns brought up regarding the discs’ chapter functions and the time-track display, both work fine. There are true chapters on the disc, and, unlike the Season 1 discs, the elapsed/remaining time is available to be displayed.
There seem to be three problems with the first disc, although they are not striking enough to warrant a recall, or making a new DVD master. Firstly, the navigation on some of the menus is not as user-friendly as I’d like. It’s not *hard* to get around, it’s just not as logical as it probably ought to be (hard to explain, but you’ll understand when you see it…things like hitting the “right arrow” navigation button not working, and having to hit “down” until you get to the feature you want to get to on-screen). Secondly, one of the chapter breaks occurs about 30-45 seconds after the scene should begin. This poses no problems in playing the episode, nothing’s missing, but if you select this particular chapter (it’s in the “Terminal” episode), it will start a bit late in the scene. Nothing too major. Thirdly, on 3 of the scene selection screens, when you make your selection and press “enter,” the selected item doesn’t give that red “enter” flash that you may be expecting. Again, it’s nothing big.
Just wanted to give people a “heads up” beforehand, so no one would think that we’re just being sloppy and didn’t notice anything. They were caught, evaluated, and it was found that they happened so late in the mastering process that the costs of creating a new master would be prohibitive, both monetarily and time-wise.…And is it just me, or has everyone been especially quiet over the past couple of days?

Thanks for the info, Aleck. Now, about distribution…heh. j/k
I’ve noticed it’s been silent lately. Maybe they are all busy with Uncon? Or…*gulp* the lexx has blown up the planet and we got pushed into an alternate plane of being, we’re the only two really on line and everything else is just a rampant figment of my imagination! OMG!! *chuckle* just kidding.

Yeah, Spring fever is getting me too and how’d you know what I look like? The fog we’ve had makes my pasty white face disappear but today has been delightful! I’ve been doing OK, how the heck are you!? Oh, how does one post a picture on the messege? I’ve got a picture of a billboard that’s hilarious! It advertises stantheonemanband.com, it’s a real site and a real bill board!
Lex as Hill-Bill-y…can’t wait to hear him do the voice. Amazingly close on the looks. Erm, Lex, baby, there some relatives you ain’t telling us about?
Are we gonna be seeing Kai with his hair down? OOOooo. I’ve also heard that 790 is gonna be back and lewd as ever! YEAH!!!
As for the oval office, I’ve never been there, my plans to take over the world have been foiled by MissJean, drat her! So I’ll assume they did an excellent job, but of course!
My little mind has been turning, turning trying to imagine the situations that could come about based on the props and snippets I’ve seen. I’m not into publically speculating about it, because if I’m wrong, I look like a doofus; if I’m right, I look like a genius. I’m neither one, just somewhere in the middle. *adjusts the doofus/genius glasses*
Heh, I’m REALLY feeling spring fever! I’ll be around a little more, I nuked my harddrive and reloaded. I was getting the blue screen of death too much. Now my computer has had spring cleaning and it’s time for the house, yuck!
*hums the Bee Gees “I Feel Like Dancing” Why? because it’s just stuck in my head for some unknown reason!*

hrm, Sad,having a few hiccups? heh.
Ok, warning, it’s Friday night/Saturday morning, and I’ve had a few. It’s likely this post will make next to no sense. heh. Or will have the potential to make someone feel insulted. You’ve been warned. What was I thinking? Oh, yeah! something about Kai with his hair down and thwacking off groupies! THUD! I better be represented somewhere in that spin off! heh.
As for Mr. Bill Clinton and his dyke… erm… I mean wife…well, I can only hope that the man is somehow lampooned beyond belief to make me die laughing with tears in my eyes. And to make the hilarity even more than I can handle, 790 wants the evilest thing he can find. Ok, I warned you this could be offensive!
And what about the Lexx? How many of us really want to see him get a piece of ass? (continues on her offensive rampage, I’m not scared for you to know I have an offensive side) *giggle*
And Xev and Stan, really, what could we say? The poor dears have gone through so much. Stan has been made to feel like he is the scum of the universe time and time again. Is that fair? Maybe, maybe not. Xev has been tested and grinded to the stone, how much more can the poor girl take? who knows, except the beans.
What do we want to see? *giggle* If I let MissEvil out, she would say sex, sex, and more sex. She would want Kai to experience something, even though “the dead do not…”
Xev would experience some respect against a raging libido. Stan would experience physical pleasure along the lines of love mixed in with his horniness and 790? He would get the equivalant to knowing what a vibrator feels! LOL.OK, OK, you have my permission to edit and cut anything you want out of this post. I’m feeling awful naughty tonite.
Have a good Spring everyone.

“…we will be restoring normality just as soon as we are sure what normal is anyway.”24th April 2001 at 12:27 am #46904AnonymousGuestAnother update…
This time about ordering…I know that in the past I’ve said to NOT order from Videoflicks, since they’re a Canadian-based company, and weren’t permitted to sell outside of Canadian borders. Well, it ends up that I was mistaken. We heard this past Friday (and I’ve been dodging flames for the past couple of days on other boards over this, so I haven’t gotten around to posting it here yet) that Videoflicks has sourced the product from a secondary distributor that we provide product to, and will be selling the US version to US residents, and the Canadian version to Canadian residents. I made some comments about their business practices being “illegal,” and they weren’t. (Well, regarding the Season 2 releases, anyway…They are still selling the Season 1 DVDs to whomever orders them when they’re not legally allowed to, but whatever…) So, in an effort of good faith, I’m going around telling everyone to ignore what I’d said before, and buy them from Videoflicks if you want. Everything should be okay. –Aleck
24th April 2001 at 1:25 am #46905trillianParticipanthyea Aleck, good to see ‘ya!
I do have a question. We are getting a Block Buster video that is closer than two hours away. Do they sell videos/DVDs? or just rent? (isn’t this sad? I don’t think I’ve been to a block buster yet, the opportunity was never there.) And if they sell them, would the next lexx releases be available there? If so KEWL!!! I’m so psyched, I can actually get them! woo woo!
27th April 2001 at 2:44 am #46906AnonymousGuestDoes “never before seen in the US footage” mean the episodes will be UNCUT, with nudity and language intact?
Sorry if this question has already been answered!
