I went to Best Buy, they didn’t have it, had it listed for Aug 21st. Suncoast didn’t have it and they were clueless as usual. Blockbuster doesn’t carry LEXX. I tried an inde shop. The guy there told me to check back neXt week cause they, well I guess you guys.. pushed the release date back a week.
Meanwhile, Slop got his DVD last week and said that all the stores out there had it put out. Slop is in Arizona. I was shopping today in Mesquite, TX. I’m very upset not to mention I’ve wasted like $10 on gas for nothing because the crappy town I live in only has a Wal-mart and Hastings, neither of which carry LEXX. So I have to drive like 45 min up into Dallas to shop and I don’t have a credit card to order it online
Can you tell me what’s going on?
ThanX,

…All of which is insane. Best Buy, I have no idea what’s up with them. They’re owned by the same people as Suncoast, which makes sense that they’d have the same response as the Suncoast people. The indie store you went to lied. Pure and simple. Either that, or they’ve gotten incorrect information from the secondary distributor they buy from. Anyway, about Suncoast, I’ll pass along the info here. My suggestion on your end is to call the store you went to, complain to the manager on duty, and then ask for the District (or Regional) Manager’s number, and complain to them about this. Apparantly, the store you’re going to is staffed with people who don’t know what they’re doing. If I’m not mistaken, they’ve screwed up on both release dates so far, and the huge amount of nagging we did on our end didn’t do any good. Let the DM know that you’re a regular shopper there, that you go out of your way to buy your DVDs at that store, and that if they can’t get their business worked out, you will shop elsewhere. Suncoast is more likely to respond to customer complaints, since the individual stores don’t have any direct contact with us (their DVDs come through a central shipping department for all the stores, rather than having individual buyers for each store or region).
The DVDs were released today, and I don’t know why (except for the fact that these stores are staffed by minimum-wage high school kids) they can’t get the product out in time. Complain about it.–Aleck

The dvd is technically out, but hasn’t
actually quite filtered down to the retail
stores here yet. I had to beg my pal at
Suncoast to carry the first two titles, and
they’ve only gotten a couple of requests
for it at all. The distributor, Baker and
Taylor, carries all labels dvd and video, and
Suncoast (and everyone else for that matter)
order direct from them. The official “street
date” on a title is when it hits wholesalers.
Then, the retail accounts can order it from
them, IF they have a demand for the title.
Suncoast in Lewisville (ask for David) and
in Arlington (ask for Brandon) are getting
copies in, but they had to especially ask
for it…
BTW, they are already selling it on ebay,
and I have all the first 4 movies coming in
from Canada, in US region code, on dvd format. If you want info on how to get more,
let me know. The 4th dvd is already out…

-James T. Kirk1st August 2001 at 10:04 am #47842AnonymousGuestThanX, Aleck. Still that doesn’t bode too well. How can places like Suncoast carry straight to video crap no one has ever heard of which features no major or known stars or talent, and yet LEXX, SciFi’s number 2 show (at least) gets snubbed? What kinda **** is that?
Acorn needs to start whuppin’ some ass!! I volunteer to be deputised.

This is all just wrong information. Suncoast gets the majority of our product directly from us, and not through a secondary distributor like Baker and Taylor. As far as I know, it’s sent from us to a central distribution center for the Suncoast stores, and from there it goes to the individual stores. What may have happened is that the store in question was late in receiving a shipment of product which included th S2V3 discs, as I’m pretty sure that we were prompt in shipping on our end.
As for the question of what a street date means, it means the date that a product hits the street. That’s when you can buy it in stores. *NOT* when it’s available for wholesale sales. I’ve worked on both ends of the retail spectrum (prior to working at Acorn, I spent 5 years as a buyer for Tower Records), and I know what a street date means. A retailer can order from a distributor, on average, 6 weeks prior to the street date (this is how, say, if you hear that an album is due out on August 21, a music store can have it in on the 21st. The 21st is the street date, and they placed their order for it *prior* to the street date so that it can be there on time).
If the Suncoast in your neigborhood didn’t have the first 2 releases, and you had to ask for it, they were not in compliance with the promotion set up by their corporate office. All Suncoasts were to have the first 2 releases set up at or near the cash wrap area, and promoting them with a trading card giveaway, and if they didn’t have this, it is because someone on the retail end messed up.–Aleck
1st August 2001 at 9:46 pm #47847AnonymousGuestWell, I called Barnes and Knobles in Arlington. They do not have it either nor do they plan to have it on hand in their stores according to the guy I talked to. He said the modular only had vol 1 and 2 and there were no plans to carry the 3rd one at this time in the store itself. He said he could order it for me though through them.
I am plenty ****ed. This seems to be a problem in the Dallas/Ft.Worth and Arlington area, Aleck. I know if I was you guys I would be even more ****ed that my product wasn’t even making it into the stores. I finally said to hell with it and got my friend who was kind enough to order it for me online through Amazon.com.
So what does this kind of attitude mean for future releases?

Well, the potential for the Season 3 release depends on the sales of Season 2, and the sales of Season 3 impact the planning of Season 4. How many exactly, I don’t know, and I don’t know if there *is* a definite number. However, we’re not as dependent on big sales as larger houses (we’ve got a small staff), and the first 2 Season 2 releases have sold very well. So, I can’t say definitely that Season 3 *will* come out, simply because it’s too early, and it’s not etched in stone. I will say, however, that it wouldn’t surprise me in the least.

2nd August 2001 at 9:52 pm #47852AnonymousGuestCan’t even get volume 3 of season 2 onto store shelves. I reccomend pestering the local stores and demand they put out vol 3 on store shelves. Get phone numbers of the district managers and call them up and ask if they need the number of a good glasectomologist.

Yeah it would be insane not to release the third season on DVD as well as its sold allready. Also this season is going to be its biggest ever and you would have to be out of your mind not to release S4 on DVD. But watch because the US Sci-Fi put alot of money into it they’ll hold onto the rights some how and refuse to let them be put out. I doubt they could do that but it wouldn’t surprise me if scifi wanted to stick it to the fans till the bitter end.

I wouldn’t worry about that. Sci Fi may have put money into it, but the rights are still held by Salter Street (now Alliance Atlantis). And right now, it’s just a matter of exercising options in a pre-existing contract, depending on the sales of the current season’s discs. Sci Fi couldn’t stop it if they wanted to. And X, I think the retail outlets in your neck of the woods are just out there. As for B&N, not carrying the discs doesn’t surprise me. Their DVD selection sucks (every store I’ve been in only has part of a dump bin devoted to them), and LEXX really doesn’t fit their targeted demographic. If there’s a Borders near by, check them. Their DVD selection is usually ace.

Was it juxtaposed with footage from Charlie’s Angels? Because I always liked it when they did that. Ahh, when Gibby walked the earth like a god among men.

-James T. Kirk4th August 2001 at 6:12 am #47860theFreyParticipantAleck, I gave your email address to the regional buyer for Best Buy in Texas. They are currently getting their stuff from Ventura Distribution, and his info was that Season 2-3 wouldn’t be out until the end of the month. He wants some better info, so he can order them, possibly direct.
Also they only have one or two in the stores at this time. I gently pointed out to him that we can’t buy them, if they don’t carry them. He said he’d work on it, and get back with me.
