13 days till the premiere!!!!!!
YIPPEE!!!!!!!!!!
please let us have another series in the B5 universe!
TNT 7th January 2002 at 9:18 pm #58476FlamegrapeParticipantThey brought back G’Kar. I wish they’d brought back Lyta Alexander, too. I luv that telepath! Visit my Lyta Alexander Fanpage!
7th January 2002 at 9:55 pm #58477HeadgehogParticipantSorry to be the one to tell you this but Lyta is dead by the Rangers movie. After two years she comes back with G’Kar to take control of the army Garabaldi was building for her while she was gone. This causes the Telepath War. She dies in some heroic fashion to end the war. In the Crusade universe; there is no psi corp, telepaths can have “mundane jobs”, they don’t have to wear gloves and public opinion has improved in their favor. However there is a new psi corp equivalent, but they’re not nearly as evil. More like a bunch of petty beurocrats(spelling)
This has all been implied/stated in previous books. However JMS wants to make this story into an actual movie, so that’s why we haven’t gotten a lot of details on the subject.Oh, also in the Crusade universe, Bester was a war criminal, this was meant to be introduced in the 14th episode. TNT Bester was to have a large supporting-role in Crusade, much like Lockley.

That’s stated in a book or in B5 or Crusade episode? If it was in a book, does JMS treat novels as cannon? Dammit, I can’t believe that JMS would kill her off! I thought he liked her! (Both the actress and the character.)

It stated in a trilogy of books. Yes JMS works closely with them and makes sure they fit into his plan for the B5 universe. He does like the character and actress, thats why he wants it to be made into a movie. Lyta dying for the freedom of telepaths is exactly what she would do!

I was wondering what was wrong with the
timeline I sent you to. Crusade started 4 1/2 years after the end of Objects at Rest. LOTR is set ~3 years after that same episode.
According to rumor, speculation, and blatent hints by scifi and JMS we could see a new series by fall of this year. Maybe I’m speaking too soon, but expect a new B5 series for the fall.[ 16-01-2002: Message edited by: Headgehog ]

There is no way it could be enjoyed by anyone who has not followed Babylon 5. They never explain what a Ranger is, or who the One is. We know this, but omitting those explanations limit their audience to people like us who are familiar with the universe.
Captain Martel was well-developed, but he seems a little similar to Matthew Gideon. The new alien menace is just a rehash of the Shadows. Of course the Drazi character is big and dumb, the traitor was the ugliest looking alien, and the bad guys are dressed all in black and you can’t see their faces (“looks like the new Divine Shadow host is a Vorlon”).
There also seemed to be inconsistencies. They had a changeling net but called it a holosuit, and they referred to a parallel universe beyond hyperspace but never called it Thirdspace. And could someone explain to me why the jump points look different? For the entire run of Babylon 5 and Crusade they were the same, but now they look like the beginning credits of Doctor Who. Am I missing something?
G’Kar’s appearance seemed tacked on. I know they needed someone from the first series to launch this one, but wouldn’t Sheridan or Lennier be more logical? G’Kar just got annoying after a while. And that subplot with the telepathic echo of the dead crew didn’t work for me at all.
All in all, Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers was the weakest of all the Babylon 5 T.V. movies, and I only hope the series that follows will be better than this unpromising lead.

Why am I not suprised? I knew you’d be the first one to nit-pick. I think you’d nay-say the Second Coming. (Just kidding!)

You need to give other intelligent speculative fiction fanatics more credit. I enjoy watching the occasional Buffy The Vampire Slayer episode even though I know nothing of any story arc or background mythology.

Captain Martel is like Captain Matthew Gideon who is like Captain Elizabeth Lochley who is like Captain John Sheridan who is like Commander Jeffrey Sinclair who is like Captain James Kirk who is like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers who is like Horatio Hornblower, etc., etc., ad nauseum…

JMS is probably pleased with your conclusion. He’s probably thinking, “Ha ha ha! They fell for it, hook, line, and sinker! The fans have no idea what’s coming.” It took them a long time to build up to the revelation of who and what the Shadows were. Do you think JMS would leave nothing to tell in subsequent movies/episodes?

Bad guys always wear black. It’s the law.

Behold a prime example of worthless nit-picking.

I like G’Kar. I thought he fit into the story very well. His rapier wit always makes B5 more fun.
You didn’t like the subplot with the telepathic echo of the dead crew? But you bought the idea of Soul Hunters? And technomages? And Thirdspace? (And hyperspace, for that matter…)

After all that complaining you are still going to watch the show. Typical.
1st March 2002 at 3:29 am #58496AnonymousGuestPersonal attacks aside (ahem Flamegrape ) I never saw a single scene from B5 before seeing this movie, and I did like it.
It didnt blow me away by any means, it was just good Sci-Fi. Having now seen the 5th season, Id say that was way better than this movie though. Even individual eps were much better than the movie. But the movie didnt suck by any means.
As a person never seeing B5, I assumed the “Live for the one, die for the one” was just a rehash of “All for one and one for all” not that there was anything special about “The One”, is it a specific person or something?
Thanks for the links though, I got caught up with all my confusion on the timelines. I suppose it’d be better(for n00bs) if the series/movies were more linear but oh well.
14th March 2002 at 8:28 am #58497AnonymousGuestHere I stand, looking at you Westerners and my eyes turn a green shade of envy. There you guys are, talking about Babylon 5:Legend Of The Rangers like the experts you are, and here I am, a poor Malysian sci-fi fan, having no idea what you are talking about….
I mean, A Call To Arms and Crusade were aired in 1999, but when did it arrive here?! Two-bloody-thousand-and-bloody-one, that’s when!WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

15th March 2002 at 4:51 am #58498AnonymousGuestwhen are we in the UK likely to see it? (and i don’t mean at 1am on a wednesday morning on Channel 5!!! (not very sci-fi friendly, some of these schedulers))
15th March 2002 at 1:50 pm #58499AnonymousGuestTo LexxLurker (koowall name, dat!)
Sorry I didn’t reply to your post earlier, but I was caught up in my frustration over the disturbing lack of sci-fi awareness in Malaysia. You wanted to know who exactly is ‘The One’? This mysterious ‘One’ just happens to be the first captain of Babylon 5, namely, Captain Jeffrey Sinclair. In the Babylon 5 arc, Jeffrey was stationed on Babylon 5 for a year before becoming ambassador to Mimbar, home of the Mimbari and making way for John Sheridan, whose tale is a damn good tale on it’s own. Around his third year (at least I think it was his third, it was in the fourth season after all) as ambassador, he recieved a letter to him from 1000 years in the past, from…HIMSELF! It was revealed that he would travel a thousand years back in time along with Babylon 4 in order to stop the marauding Shadows by forming the Anla-Shok, also known as the Rangers. While in the jouney back, he transformed himself into a Human/Mimbari hybrid and assumed the name Valen, a.k.a. ‘The One’. The Ranger credo, “WE LIVE FOR THE ONE, WE DIE FOR THE ONE” originates from their willingness to serve unto death the principles espoused by Valen. In this respect they are similar to the Templar of medieval times. Clear anything up?

15th March 2002 at 3:11 pm #58500AnonymousGuest actually super joe if my memory serves me correctly, there are 3 “the one”s in the ep that you are talking about. Sinclair is the “one who was”, Delenn is the “one who is” and Sheridan is the “one who will be”. i feel certain that “the One” refers to the person in charge of the Anla Shok. but i also think that this terms includeds not only the person who happens to be in charge at the time, but also Valen. because if i remember right, Sinclair took B4 back in time a 1,000 years to help in the war. on the way he did the metamorphis thing and became Valen. and when he went back he knew things about the future that he put to use. such as the formation of the Rangers. he also instituted the 3 class system of government the Minbari use. Worker caste, Warrior caste and the Religious caste. and i am pretty sure that he was instrumental in forming the Grey Council. 15th March 2002 at 11:06 pm #58501AnonymousGuestThanks mary beth, for adding those choice tidbits of info. I REALLY should have remembered them, ‘cept for some reason, they completely slipped my mind. Damn, it must be the Devil at work here, ‘cos normally I of all beings wouldn’t forget something as important like that.
Furious rant aside, I hope that these two posts have cleared up a few things for you, LexxLurker, but for the real deal, I suggest that you watch Babylon 5 itself, a spiritual journey of enlightenment if I ever had one. Forget freezing yer nadgers off on some 5,000 foot mountain with a name pronouncable only by people with names like Son Of Dawn Lobsang Tatyanarama, watch Babylon 5 from the beginning to end, and I guarantee you that you will emerge changed for the better. If you don’t, I’ll eat my Psi Corps uniform.
P.S. mary beth, when did we get on a first and second name basis ( “actually super joe if my memory serves me correctly….)? I am attached you know (heh, heh).
16th March 2002 at 3:33 am #58502AnonymousGuestHoly crap!! I didnt realize there was that much to it. Sci-Fi is now running from the beginning of Series 1, so Ive now seen the first 4 eps as well as the final Series.
Seeing it start over things are so different. Delenn(spelling) is a total mimbari and quite different. I learned about this thing called the “Grey Council” which apparantly is some spiritual secret center of the Minbari ruling council. And I read a spoiler online that talked about the Mimbari-Human war, that sounded really cool! Apparantly we got our asses kicked then at the last second the Mimbari surrendered because their Grey Council found evidence of Mimbari Souls in human bodies.
Then last night I saw Soul Hunter, which was a great episode revealing a lot about Delenn.
This captain tho “Sinclair” I’ve never seen before. The last season was all about Sheridan and since I was just learning the series I missed a lot of info in the first few eps I watched.
G’Kar is a lot different too!!
Having watched the last season first, I assumed he was this “Christ” like visionary who wrote a book that is evolving his people slowly but surely into a more peaceful understanding race. But in the first season G’Kar is a mean geezer!! And him and Londo are always at each others throats. Will be interesting to see how their relationship evolved into what it was in the final series. Wish it was on a lil later, since I get home just as it comes on but oh well.
