from what i remember the mice actually were the most intelligent creature on earth and they were actually observing us when we thought we were observing them in the labs. and wasn’t there something about dolphins in the show? Yes dolphins were in there. They were also more intelligent than us (big surprise huh)and knew that the Volgons(?) were comign to destroy Earth. They tried to warn us, by doing summer saults and tricks but we thought they were being funny. They gave up on us and fled the earth to avoid destruction.

I think it said the mice were smarter then the Dolphins, because mice are really just biological avatars for noncorporeal essences that are beyond our comprehension. That’s what I remember, at least. It’s been a while since I was really, passionately into The Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy. Anyway, the last communication from the dolphins before they left Earth by their own power translated as “So long, and thanks for all the fish”, which was also the title of the fourth Hitchhiker book.

And the dolphin’s final message was interpreted as (I think) a triple somersault while whistling the Star-Spangled Banner. And they gave Arthur, Fenchurch and Wonko the Sane fishbowls engraved with the words “So long and thanks for all the fish”, which when held up to the ear transmitted a message from the dolphins…
