McGoohan in Crazy Sci-Fi Soft Porn Movie….

Gonna babble here….
I would like to know if anyone else has seen McGoohan in [i]Hysteria[/i]. He plays a mad psychiatrist named Harvey Langston who designs a new therapy for his patients involving implants in the brain which link their minds together. Using this “Collective Consciousness” approach, and taking part in it himself, everyone in the asylum knows everyone else inside and out when they are in range.
Another psychiatrist named Dr. Frye kidnaps one of his own patients (Veronica) and brings her to Langston for therapy, but not knowing the procedure he’s using, he doesn’t tell them she’s a psychopath.
Anyway, he and Amanda Plummer’s character have a philosophical discussion while everyone in the madhouse is telepathically experiencing Dr. Frye being seduced by Veronica. It’s a very lengthy montage. (Also, one of the perpetually topless girls looks like the blonde telepath from the first season of Babylon 5 without mascara– was she in it?)
Honestly, I can’t tell if it was supposed to be a philosophical thing on the individual against the collective mind, a sci-fi fairy-tale on the nature of true love, or an excuse for soft porn in a madhouse. (Like you need an excuse for soft porn in a madhouse!) 😉
It reminded me of Quills and Boxing Helena.
What do y’all think of this? Turning point in his career, or just sick of being known as the biggest prude in show business? 😛
(And then he went right back to Disney. Hmmm….)

Where were McGoohan’s moral values then? 😯 *No. 5’s head explodes* Oops, wrong movie, though the collective consciousness reminds me a bit of Scanners; there are also obvious similarites in your description to The Prisoner.
I haven’t seen it, sounds very interesting. Perhaps McGoohan was looking to expand his repertoire, or just wanted a job. According to the following site (link now found at bottom of post :oops:) his performance was superb (I’ve never seen him less than very good in anything), and he certainly has actively chosen, or solicited projects (and roles) with psychological and philosophical concerns (underpinnings). And there’s more than one way to explore the qualities of virtue — Quills (good example of yours) was an interesting study. Without decadence, or amorality, can there be virtue? Just thought that question segued half-decently (or maybe not quite half) into this quote from Mcgoohan’s character in Hysteria “Grandeur is not a delusion; it’s a birthright.” Now how Sade is that?

The more I’ve been thinking about it, the more I think he did it, at least in part, to throw a monkey wrench into his Mythical status. It’s not like he wasn’t being offered roles left and right after that “science fiction” masterpiece Braveheart….j/k.
My favorite line of McGoohan’s– Amanda Plummer’s character is in a wheelchair. Frye asks Langston what is wrong with her legs, and Langston replies: “Why, nothing! This is a madhouse, not a hospital!”
My favorite line of Plummer’s– “Society is the greatest asylum of them all.”
Someone just put one up on Ebay again if anyone’s interested. I think it’s only ever been released NTSC in Canada, and it’s out of print.

Hey, this sounds interesting. I will have to try to find it and watch it. Anything with P.M. in it can’t be too bad, and the philosophical angle sounds fun.
Braveheart may not have been sci-fi — it’s Hammer time 😉 — but it could very easily be described as fantasy. Who knows? It may have been an attempt by P.G. to break the mould — of course nothing so groundbreaking as Captain Kirk as the Chairman in Iron Chef USA. 😛

McGoohan plays a rake named Jess. My service provider hasn’t been doing well with streaming video lately, but if it’s working and you follow the link there are 2 rare kissing scenes and one really cool horse trick in which McGoohan mounts a horse from a standing jump…. not the usual leapfrog move, or bouncing up while the horse is running. He just swings right up no stirrups or saddle.
There is a better kissing scene in High Tide at Noon, but it’s too dark to get a good picture. The clip made the [url=http://tv.petserrano.com/number_83/index.html]top ten downloads[/url], though.
