What should I watch?

My familiarilty with modern sci-fi/fantasy is pretty limited and I’m looking to expand my horizons. The prob is that I don’t have the time or inclination to channel surf searching for a good series or two- I tend to rely on DVDs. A friend loaned me The Tenth Kingdom recently, which I quite enjoyed, and an obscure series about a big bug in the sky has brought me the odd moment of entertainment. Now, I want to expand my horizons, primarily by buying DVDs. Any suggestions?
I’ve heard conflicting reviews of Tripping the Riff, but Red Dwarf has caught my interest, based on what I’ve read here. Advice, recommendations, and feedback about possible candidates would be greatly appreciated.
If both Fantasy and Sci-Fi are your thing, I’d really advise Farscape.
It’s basically “Forgotten Realms” in space. They even add Drow about halfway through the first season, errr I mean Nebari of course!
I’d also advise the Dune mini-series for the same reasons, especially if you’re familiar with the books.
Cleopatra2525 and Earth: Final Conflict are also great series, though I’m not sure if the former is available on DVD
If I had to recommend one show to get on DVD, Red Dwarf would be it. The first thing I thought when I saw Lexx ( besides ” Hey, I didn’t know they have Elvis impersonators in the Light Zone ” ) was that the writers must be Red Dwarf fans.
Dave Lister is an anti-hero in the way Stanley Tweedle is. I personally consider Dave Lister to be a predecessor to Stanley Tweedle. The Dwarf is populated with loveable misfits just like the Lexx. A lot of the themes are similar too.
I’ll probably be strung up by my toes for saying this, but the dialogue is much sharper and witter in Red Dwarf than Lexx. The CGI isn’t really there in RD as it is in Lexx, in fact, the show looks pretty budget at times. RD also lacks the human eye candy factor when compared to Lexx. But the writing way makes up for crappy sets and the lack of droololicious love slaves and assassins.
I’ve watched Red Dwarf for 15 years, and I never tire of it. 😀

Why not surf Space’s line-up and check out some of what they have cooking? That way you can get a preview before you spend bucks. They are showing Tripping the Riff. You know my prejudice with respect to it but, hey! how knows? you might find it enteraining.
I once thought Red Dwarf was wildly funny. Worth checking out – it might just be that I’m losing my sense of humour. I am definitely going to catch the season finale of Alienated on June 15 and see what that show is all about.
Other shows that are not sci-fi but worth watching are Showcase’s Trailer Park Boys. Canadian and funny as hell. I think it airs on Showcase Sunday evenings. You can experience the trials and tribulations of making a living growing dope in a trailer park. They did an episode last season with the lead characters Ricky and Julian, defending themselves in criminal court ,without a lawyer, on charges of stealing gasoline. It was beyond brilliant and actually plausible in a totally f**cked up Canadian way.
And starting mid-June, season 3 of 6 Feet Under is airing. Seasons 1 and 2 were very interesting. Quite a different show. 😀 Very dark humour. My VCR is looking forward to it.
I’ve caught Trailer Park Boys a couple of times. Very funny stuff. Oddly enough, if it weren’t for the Canadian accents, I could swear Trailer Park Boys was filmed in my redneck of the woods. Makes me think I should get out my videocamera and wifebeater and head to the local trailer park. 😆

The scripts for Red Dwarf were pretty witty and quick. The Brits seem to do everything better. Even their smegheads have a better command of the language than we do. 😀
Thanks to all for the advice. It sounds like Red Dwarf is my next investment.
LexxLurker: Farscape was another series that caught my attention while rummaging around this site over the past year so I might give it a try too. I must say, though, that I’m not familiar with ‘Forgotten Realms’. I have read the Dune books, but I’m looking for something a bit twisted and humourous, I suppose. Stiil, thanks for the help.
KarubaLuna and Streudel: Trailer Park Trash, eh? I’ve read about it. Sounds like a series I could relate to. I might just have to make the effort to sync my life with the T.V. for once and check it out. Thanks and a tip o’ the spliff…
