…so you’ve been flicking through the music channels on cable or satellite, to hear a song that’s made you not want to change channel. you’ve been listening to the radio, and you’ve heard something that’s vastly superior to the tat that’s in the charts. or you’ve been dragged off to some musical event by your friends, to discover a band that’s made you want to sing along, dace, rush out and buy their cd’s (or whatever). if you’ve heard a great band recently, why not tell us all about them? who they are, what sort of music they play, or any other facts and figures about them that you think people will be interested in. tell fans of the same sort of music about the great bands that they may just be missing out on! π share your thoughts with the world…..
31st July 2006 at 6:05 am #76612lexxrobotechParticipantWell, not really new, but I still can’t seem to take my “Killers” cd out of my car.
I think Snow Patrol’s ‘Chasing Cars’ and Keanes ‘Is it any wonder’ are still my two songs of the moment though.
Best CD of the moment is Angels and Airwaves. Their song ‘the machine’ is probably one of the best songs I’ve ever heard.
31st July 2006 at 11:11 am #76613MetalliKatParticipanti’m currently more or less obsessed with a band called Breed 77- they’re a spanish-gibraltan band based in london (i think!). overall, they describe their sound as ‘flamenco metal’, which isn’t quite as wierd a concept as it might sound. i think they’re planning on spreading their wings a bit, and going after the american an australian markets in a big way in the next few months. they’re not such a well known band at the minute, though i think they deserve to be. i’d be interested to hear if anyone here knows about them? off the top of my head, if anyone were to ask me to recommend a couple of their tracks, i’d say ‘La Ultima Hora’ (off their ‘Cultura’ album) and ‘Breaking the silence’, ‘karma’ and ‘Floods’ off their first album. there’s probably a couple of tracks <cough> that i could recommend off their new album <cough> which is out in september <cough>….but i don’t have a copy of it <cough> π π i first heard the band after flicking through the music channels on the cable package that i have- ‘La Ultima Hora’ had just been released. it made me stop and listen…which is why i was asking if anyone else had discovered a band that they enjoy listening to in a similar way? it needn’t be someone that no-one’s ever heard of…perhaps you’ve finally got onto the foo fighters bandwagon, for example…? (i was speaking to someone the other day, younger than i am, who says she’s never heard any of their stuff-and they seem to dominate the scene at the minute!! so anything’s possible… π )
31st July 2006 at 5:57 pm #76614AnonymousGuestThanks for the flamenco metal heads up! π Always lookung for new music to try.
Currently into System of a Down (Mezmerise).
I think if you want to find new music that sounds similar to something (Song or band) you should check out Pandora.com. It’s great!
31st July 2006 at 8:08 pm #76616MetalliKatParticipantthanks, saddy- have bookmark pandora! π
if you’re interested, you might like to check out this section of breed’s website-
http://www.breed77.net/jan_06/band.htm
there’s a little thing at the top of the screen called ‘breed radio’ (it’s fairly simple to work out how to use!) that plays snippets of several of their tracks π
i tend to struggle at the minute when it comes to finding out about new bands. the bf has taken over the tv, so i don’t get to flick through the music channels so much, i work mainly out of an office now (so i don’t get to listen to the radio), and IT at work won’t let us stream or download anything…miserable sods and their precious bandwidth….. i’m relying on oher people to tell me how great new bands are now!!!30th August 2006 at 9:08 am #766447th_DizbusterParticipantCurrently touring the UK are Hayseed Dixie (get the wordplay?). If you get a chance, check them out, especially if you enjoy your favorite rock anthems rearranged in the bluegrass style. There is a video of their rendition of Ace of Spades on the website http://www.hayseed-dixie.com/. Their album “Let
There Be Rockgrass” is a revelation. If you like your rock off the wall then seek out The Sawdoctors, an Irish band with a very cutting sense of humour. Oh dear, how many puns can one fit into one sentence? I need to lie down again.

How can anyone sing (melodically) with 6 meathooks in their back! (video on Youtube!)
31st August 2006 at 8:38 pm #76649MetalliKatParticipantHayseed Dixie are playing at a local biker’s pub in september….unfortunately it’s sold out… π
another annoyance at the minute is the fact that at the minute, i can’t download or stream anything that has anything to do with quicktime (including SadCasts π₯ ). those nice people at dell saw fit to configure my computer in such a way that when i removed the mcafee security suite (that was free for 3 months) when the trial period expired, it took out part of quicktime with it- stopping it working. i can’t uninstall it and do a fresh install because it’s taken out part of quicktime’s uninstall program, and if i do a system restore to a point before i uninstalled mcafee (at which time quicktime starts working again) and am then able to get quicktime off my computer, i can’t then get rid of mcafee…grrrrr πΏ31st August 2006 at 9:30 pm #76650aquabloodstoneParticipantMusical discovery or not, after seeing the LG chocolate commercial and the promos for Nip/Tuck, I too have fallen in love with a Strict Maching and Goldfrapp.
Off the musical subject, but I can commiserate with the Dell/McAfee situtation. They have a way of taking the “convenient” personal home computer and twisting into a nightmarish configuation of wires and faulty programming that force you to commit horrific crimes against humanity in frustration. But I’m not bitter or anything π

Going off topic a bit but I hate to see large corporations forcing their choice of products on the buyer. I have been buying Dells since 1998. They have changed a bit since then going the way of Sony and other mass market suppliers by chanelling you down the ‘one click installation route (remember Packard Bell? I still have nightmares). My current Inspiron arrived with such an installation but I use Sofos and dislike McAfee with a passion. I ended up extracting the operating system from the backup partition doing a reinstallation of only what I wanted.
As a suggestion, if you uninstall McAfee, delete any folders left over for McAfee and Quicktime, then use a registry cleaner to remove any references to McAfee and Quicktime from the registry. The reinstallation of Quicktime should then work. You can do this by hand but if you are not 100% confident, get some help, just not from PC World but that’s another story. πΏ Hope this helps. Good Luck.
1st September 2006 at 12:07 pm #76654MetalliKatParticipantthanks for the suggestions on how to deal with my dell/mcafee situation….not really confident enough to deal with it myself, so i’ve asked IT at work if they can have a look at it for me. trouble is, the company’s setting up a new computerised business management/database system, which went live today. IT did say they’ll look at my computer next week, but i’m not holding my breath…. π so if anyone in the meantime suggests i check out a certain video by a certain band, if it plays only through quicktime, i’m stuffed…..
3rd September 2006 at 8:51 pm #76659mandara kParticipantThe Battle of Evermore by either Led Zepplin or Heart does a decent rendition.
It’s lines like “The sky is filled of good and bad, mortals never know.”
Or, “The pain of war cannot exceed the woe of aftermath.”
Oh heck here’s a nice link.
For you LOTR fans it’s for that, but well its nice.

http://www.yat-kha.com/8th September 2006 at 4:45 am #76668mandara kParticipantI make old songs new to me again, “Baba O’Reilly”by The Who is one.
I find it hard to listen to some newer hardcore stuff, it’s kinda whiny if not downright depressing, i need upbeat stuff especially since I feel downhearted about what is coming to be. I mean the writers and producers spouses now take over fan BB’s (like theone i got thrown off of) that’s not right. it becomes a stage for all the things I abhor. This is not a voice for all then, those that wish to speak their minds are silenced or pushed into going along with the crowd to fit in. Just because Mrs. Mucky-muck says so?
Not hardly. I think she should concentrate on her fertility shots and leave fans alone and that goes for all her ilk. The boards are for fans not people with vested intersts in outcomes. If it remains that become a tool, a marketing tool. Information may be but conduct your little favorite fan club off public BB’s!
There is no last free vestige away from these people. No place to just say yes good, this is a good part, no this is not without some writers wife breathing down one’s neck with a new login name.
It’s just not right. You’ll never get numbers like that, even if you could get mainstream attention you’ll never keep them. It’s just wrong, it just feels so tainted, i want to take a shower now immediately after i go to sci-fi for info, I shudder and feel unclean.
Sorry rant city.
Back to topic, besides “Baba O’Reilly” FBS’s “Star 69” It repeats
“They know what is what but they don’t know what is what, WTF?”
which sums up what i feel this does to a fanbase. Regular people look to these idols they make for themselves thinking they are cool but these self-proclaimed paragons that are raised higher then us don’t know true suffering so how can they relate?
19th September 2006 at 6:53 pm #76698AnonymousInactiveNice topic. Well, the last year has been a real voyage of musical discovery for me.
It started with wanting to re-explore the so-called Prog world. So I rediscovered 70’s Progressive Rock (an often problematic label incidentally) that I hadn;t listened to in many years like certain Yes releases, Gryphon, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Genesis, King Crimson, Camel (The Snow Goose)and Focus (Hamburger Concerto being one of my favourite albums of all). That brought me into discovering other English 70’s bands like Gentle Giant, which was a real revelation as I hadn’t known them before… 72’s Acquiring the Taste (and their subsequent six albums), for instance, is such an unusual album. It blends mediaeval troubadour styles with jazz and rock. They have some amazing (at least for rock) vocal harmonies.
Gentle Giant was a huge discovery for me — lousy name though. It’s a band that Prog fans are divided on — some love them, and some hate them.
Here you can stream some of their songs… myspace CLICK And much better yet, here at Progarchives with reviews CLICK
A lot of the music I listened to I discovered through progarchives. Then I got into 70’s Italian bands like Premiata Forneria Marconi, Le orme, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, and Museo Rosenbach (Zarathustra’s a great rockin’ album). Then into French 70’s bands like Carpe Diem, various Spanish ones, and various Quebecois ones (mostly jazz-fusion from Quebec). So much music that I won’t bother to pick and choose.
I always had an eye on making my tastes more contemporary since for too long I focussed on classic rock. I discovered a great 1983 album by a Brazilian band — Bacamarte’s Depois do Fim (sadly out of print).
From the 90’s, Anglagard’s Hybris was an eye-opener. Lots of great music from Sweden. Can download Jordrok at their official site (very good, I thought). http://www.anglagard.net/sounds.htm
For a somewhat similar band with a harder edge I think, I suggest Anekdoten: http://www.myspace.com/anekdoten I’m not a fan of Anekdoten to tell the truth, at all. Oh gloom… Bah! Got way too much emoting for my tastes (oh I don’t like Emo — embarrassing).Lots of great music from this decade. My most recent find is Kotebel’s 2006 release, Omphalos. I really like it, but it certainly won’t appeal to most people. It’s part rock, part opera, part Braoque, part this and that. I like music that fuses genres to create something new (which is why I tend to like much so-called Prog, though I don’t like all of the Prog subgenres. Neo-prog (as often classified) is yucky, and I have a somewhat limited appreciation for Progressive Metal).
Here’s the official site — > http://www.kotebel.com/ They have mp3 samples from each album in their discography. And under Omphalos quick link you can download one full mp3 — Mercury Pentacle.
It’s hardly a perfect album for me though, as I find it suffers from too much repetition. Some will find it pretentious. KArda Estra is another one that I like (kind of Western Art Music meets Jazz Rock and Gothic) — and no, I’m hardly Goth.
My musical tastes and repertoire have expanded greatly over the last 12 months or so. I am listening to a lot of fusion and avant garde music these days. Much is hard to find simply because I do tend to avoid the really commercial stuff — the music I listen to has, on the whole, limited popular appeal even though it ranges from hard rock to classical to jazz to folk inspired (sometimes a combination of all of the above).
I just got so sick of listening to the same old stuff on the radio (like the classic rock station that has been playing the same setlist for donkey’s years). Sure it’s classic rock, but there’s so much to choose from, but it’s the same old blues based repertoire (blues pentatonic scale) again and again with the same old time signatures. It’s very bring for me when they’re sticking to 4/4 (or 3/4) time. I want variations in rythym. That’s one of the big problems for me with much music — steady beats and boring drumming, and music that plays by the rules of the genre (is overly commercial and radio-friendly).
Just like good sci-fi shows/ movies, I want to see bands that are experimental, and aren’t afraid to push the boundaries, innovate, and boldly go in their own musical direction rthaer than where the industry wnats them to go. On reason why i think it’s such a great time for music is because many musicians aren’t forced to suck the industry’s teat anymore. They have their own labels and can do their own thing. They may not become rich and famous off it, but thanks to technological developments, they can at least find an audience for their music (na dit’s become easier to produce your own). Of course it’s nice if they can make enough money off their art to quit their day jobs and conentrate on making music.

I’m gonna get myself connected
I ain’t gonna go blind
For the light which is reflected
I see thru you
I see thru you
I see thru you

Ya make me sick
I see thru you
I see thru you
I’m gonna do it again
I’m gonna do it again

I’m gonna do it again
Gotta do right
‘Cause something ain’t right
Gotta do right
Come on
If you make sure you’re connected
The writing’s on the wall
But if your mind’s neglected
Stumble you might fall
Stumble you might fall
Stumble you might fall

I see thru you
I’m gonna get myself
I’m gonna get myself
I’m gonna get myself connected
I ain’t gonna go blind
For the light that is reflected
Hear me out
Can ya hear me out
Can ya hear me out
Do it again
Do it again
Do it again
Do it again
I wanna do it again
I wanna do it again
I wanna do it again
Ya terrified
Ain’t gonna go blind
Ain’t gonna go blind
Here we go
If you make sure you’re connected
The writing’s on the wall
But if your mind’s neglected
Stumble you might fall
Stumble you might fall
Hear me out
Stumble you might fall
Stayin’ alive
Interstate 5
Won’t someone try
Open up your eyes
You must be blind
If you can’t see
The gaping hole
Called reality
Wanna do it again
I gonna gonna do it again
I wanna do it again
Come on
I’m gonna do it again
Hear me out
Terrified
Something ain’t right
Here we go
If you make sure you’re connected

But if your mind’s neglected
Stumble you might fall

25th October 2006 at 2:34 am #76875mandara kParticipantI’m grooving to the Black Eyed Peas Monkey Business.
I actually dug up an old song to review my path of life and my spiritual journey.
The song Fascinated by Company B.
Very clubby song and surely dates me, but it’s special to me because it recalls the first of many people to help me.
I used to club heavily and I met this DJ who used to have this uncanny ability to pull songs out of my head and play them.
This was one he pulled out the first time.
Now he did not give me the physical loving,; he gave me something better and something deeper.
He taught me to chant the same phrase i do today, and actually set in motion the events of my life.
He did out of compassion and a higher love for me as a person.
So, to you my friend,Michael Miller, wherever you are in the fecked up world, you are my hero.

I guess I am not much of a spring person, since this is the one season I don’t automatically think of any certain song when I think about that season. But… if I do think about it a minute, I guess I would have to go with the Eurythmics and their song, Here Comes The Rain Again.
Summer – Luke Skywalker And Indiana Jones – Phil Pritchett. This one reminds me of being tossed out of the house in the summer time and thinking up the weirdest things to entertain our selves.

This is a perfect fall song. All of the visuals totally compliment the music and make me feel like it is a cool fall day with a hint on rain forecast for the evening.

You can’t really tell it from the sample here, but the lead in to the song, is so totally after Thanksgiving with snippletts of the salvation army kettle bells. 11th December 2006 at 1:30 am #77110alnexiParticipantI finally got to watch the DVD I’ve had for some time β The Best of Bowie. Itβs awesome! What a history lesson β and a trip down to memory lane.
11th December 2006 at 5:00 am #77111mandara kParticipantI like Bowie too…. some….
but thank goodness you are here; I got tired of my own blither blather….
music for me is poetry in notes; love the notes, love poetry; love music….. it’s akin for me in wearing the metal cone from like that movie “signs” with Gibson; it blocks out unmanted blither blathering of others
My “80’s relook continues with Roxette’s “It Must Have Love” and well ABBA” Waterloo”… I know lamo, ABBA and all that…. but I like them sometimes… you know Fernando and etc…
I had a weekend of sea-connected movies. I watched Poseidon; don’t bother… Annapolis…. something about sailor whites man that can make a girl’s heart beat a little faster…. π I like the fact that sailors are gone for a long period of time…..’cause to have them underfoot would get on my nerves; men should just put into port about once or twice a month and then ship off. π And be with other guys; sure write all the letters ya want but leaves of twice a month on non-PMS times are all my stamina can allow.
And the last was kind of sea related but earth related; The Inconvenient Truth….. that was the eye-opener for me.
We’re going to hell in a handbasket, yessiree bob.
My playlist includes a new age piece of that floaty music
entitled “I Am The Sea” which include ocean sounds and gulls screeching.
Gotta go….. and thanks for popping in alnexi

Now of course it seems almost like an idyllic memory …
And speaking of gorgeous sailors, I just watched Pirates of the Caribbean II. Twice. No, I am lying. Twice and a half. Thanks for a head-on on Al Goreβs film, itβs been on my list for some time. 11th March 2007 at 12:01 am #77381hishadowParticipantJust purchased my first MP3 album tonight on Boomkat (5Β£ – 320kbps and no DRM). My type of music never seems to reach the public, except on some obscure radio programmings. Then again, I’m talking about electronic ambient music. It’s mostly solitude music that can be be pretty awkward listening to with friends, unlike much of the other music refered to in this thread. My preference for this music may also be related to the fact that I always get a high score for introvert on personality tests. π
Anyway, the music I bought was Svarte Greiner’s album Knive, composed by a fellow norwegian (we’re a tiny country). It got a dark but relaxing soundscape. If anyone here happend to like ambient, I recommend checking it out, and also those of you not familiar with ambient music. Some soundbites from the album: Final Sleep, The boat was my friend, Easy on the bones

It was a chart topper back in the day……
The Kendalls “Heaven’s Just a Sin Away”
I dunno……
The perfect man would be in the perfect world for me would be the one who could karoake this with me; you you’d have to have a decent voice and play harmonizing, no lead vocals. π
and Bill Munroe’s Cotton Eyed Joe if you’re a true Irish heart like me you’ll see the connection between fiddlin’ country and Irish folk music…. but then some Irish sons get uppity and forget their roots!
And These Boots are made for Walking… Nancy Sinatra of course. π

It’s a concept album set in the future and marketed by a media company who have set up a whole world of interesting challenges / quests concerned with the end of the world (2027 (give or take a year)). It’s all about a new world order and is facinating.

7th May 2007 at 7:02 pm #77516MetalliKatParticipantwell, i finally searched out ‘when people become numbers’ on myspace a couple of days ago, sat there having a listen, when my partner comes in and says “what’s that bloody racket???”. showing his age, methinks….
hello again everyone, btw π
am going to the download festival at donington again in about a month’s time. apart from the big bands that will be there, i’m looking forward to discovering some of the smaller bands that will be playing. if i can afford it, i’ll be looking at doing either the bulldog bash or the bloodstock festival-which will give me an opportunity to listen to bands that don’t make it to donington. i often find that a real measure of how good a band actually is, is how they perform live without all the electronic trickery of a studio. i have been put off by bands in the past when they’ve put in a less than enthusiastic performance on stage, and have got deeper into others on the strength of their live performance. i don’t know if others here feel the same. there are people out there who claim to be music fans, but aren’t interested in the live experience. personally, i think they’re missing out on what it’s all about…7th May 2007 at 7:11 pm #77517aquabloodstoneParticipantThe only place I get any new, or old for that matter, music is commercials. Woman by Wolfmother is my current favorite commercial song, featured in the Guitar Hero II ads. It’s very Led Zeppelin reminiscent, which in this instance makes me happy.
I still love Kodo(Inside the Sun Remix) by Yoshida Brothers that I believe I mentioned in an earlier post. Nintendo Wii to thank for that one.
Sad, sad, sad.
19th May 2007 at 12:47 am #77548mandara kParticipantI agree; even though I hate those suckas, commercials are the best way to pick up songs as well as movies I think.
In the earlier gen MTV was the place where at one time “video did “truly” kill the radio star” * gulp* my musical roots are showing* π
I don’t have time to listen to the radio anymore and the jocks around here’ well they are all personalities….
And yeah, why spend a huge cover or huge prices to see live when they could be crap live performers or some nitwit blocks the view of your $75 seat or spills beer all over you….
Life is too short for that racket; when a CD costs what under $20?
BTW I want the Saddy report song too! I’m going searching for it…
Thanks for the topic BTW!

Jimmy Buffett – Margaritaville Lyrics
Nibblin’ on sponge cake,
watchin’ the sun bake;
All of those tourists covered with oil.
Strummin’ my six string on my front porch swing.
Smell those shrimp
They’re beginnin’ to boil.Wasted away again in Margaritaville,
Searchin’ for my lost shaker of salt.
Some people claim that there’s a woman to blame,
But I know it’s nobody’s fault.Don’t know the reason,
Stayed here all season
With nothing to show but this brand new tattoo.
But it’s a real beauty,
A Mexican cutie, how it got here
I haven’t a clue.Wasted away again in Margaritaville,
Searchin’ for my lost shaker of salt.
Some people claim that there’s a woman to blame, (we get blamed for all men’s problems π )
Now I think, – hell it could be my fault. (You got THAT right)I blew out my flip flop,
Stepped on a pop top,
Cut my heel, had to cruise on back home.
But there’s booze in the blender,
And soon it will render
That frozen concoction that helps me hang on.Wasted away again in Margaritaville
Searchin’ for my lost shaker of salt.
Some people claim that there’s a woman to blame,
But I know, it’s my own damn fault.
Yes, and some people claim that there’s a woman to blame
And I know it’s my own damn fault.17th August 2007 at 1:49 am #77651mandara kParticipantIt’s a discovery re-discovery of song lyrics which are truly poetry with melody.

Angherr Shisspa is a great album of theirs from 2005. It’s not going to appeal to most people, though. I discovered that band after getting into the whole Zeuhl scene that spans many decades and bands (lots of bands I love from this ‘genre’). It started in France, but there are quite a few good (good being subjective of course) modern bands from Japan that are given that label.
Zeuhl is a kind of music originating with the French band Magma that is a sort of jazzy “avant rock” that features throbbing bass and good drumming, often chanting and operatic vocals. Like with Magma, Koenjihaykkei invented a language to go along with the music. Anyway, Koenjihyakkei would grate on most ears (harder on the ears and much noisier than most Zeuhlish stuff), I would think — frenetic stuff — but for what it’s worth, here’s the band’s site: http://www.skingraftrecords.com/bandhtmlpages/koenjipg.html
A mysite page only featuring two songs: CLICK
And, concerts of theirs on youtube.com: CLICK
And since I mentioned Magma (Eskaton, Zao, Vortex, Kultivator, Paga etc. are all good too), here’s Magma’s site: http://www.seventhrecords.com/
Really wanted to see them in concert last year at a RIO (Rock in Opposition) festival last year, but couldn’t go.
Anyway, this lame post is really just being used an excuse to drop in again at this site, so probably best ignored (haven’t watched any sci-fi in ages, so… “The Riches” was a good show though, but not SF.)
Oh, I haven’t heard that many albums from 2007, but so far my fave is Alamaailman Vasarat’s Mahaan – http://www.vasarat.com/ It has been described as acoustic death metal, which doesn’t really give the picture. It’s weird, one might say.
Erm, yeah.

3rd September 2007 at 3:26 am #77660mandara kParticipanthey, Logan! How are you?
I’ve been given some Buckethead from my bro and well my sis and he are into Guitar Hero so the music is what they like.
Saw Sweetland (an okay mushy flick and 300 and The Painted Veil)
Have less than no interest in BSG and the only sci-fi i want to deal with is reading some.
And back to watching PBS and History channel programming.
I’m watching The de Medici’s on Netflix now.
*Rasberries* all the egotisitcal BULLSH G….
I dislike attitude, and braggarts…. and the fans that line up to kiss “FAMOUS” rears.
I admire those that work and just keep working; those that pause rarely to see how they are in the public eye and refuse to take their bows too early or constantly. Who listen but do not sway or fall.
They make their own way AFTER consideration of what the people want.
Oh sorry, gotta go and sorry about ranting but i don’t much care anymore about scifi because i feel like i’ve been screwed over one to many times by arsehats in the industry
3rd September 2007 at 5:54 am #77661AnonymousInactiveI’m doing pretty well, thanks Mandara. My kids keep me grounded.
Actually, I’ve been watching Doctor Who, but have found it forgettable enough to forget to mention it. Not bad, though. I did watch last season’s BSG. I stay away from, and don’t care about, the “BS” golly-gee politics so that I can just focus on the show. It could be better, but for me it’s worth watching. I really don’t care for the excessive use of flashbacks and other devices in the show, however.
The Riches (with Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver) is definitely more my cup of tea. It’s my favourite show in quite a long time, in fact. http://fxnetworks.com/shows/originals/theriches/
Back to music: Perhaps I shouldn’t mention this, but I got an advance release of an album that will be coming out in October, and it is great. Well, great for me, anyway. Okay, it was leaked and normally I would wait, but as I wasn’t searching it out… Robert Wyatt is one of my favourite artists – from his 1960’s Soft Machine days to Matching Mole (so-called Canterbury scene music) to his “solo” work. The album of his that really got me hooked was Rock Bottom from ’74, which is terrific and particularly poignant as he made it during a very low point of his life after falling from a window and becoming a paraplegic. I think of Rock Bottom as a real triumph.
He’s continues to make albums that I enjoy: Shleep from 1997 and Cuckooland from 2003 are worth mentioning, but I really like his as yet unreleased (unofficially) album, Comicopera. Very good! I will definitely be buying it when it comes out, and it should have one more track I believe (and might be tweaked a bit). It’s nice and mellow, jazzy, folksy, bluesy, and pretty eclectic with an intimate sound. Definitely more toned down/ layed back than the music in my last post.
Here’s a Robert Wyatt myspace page (with several songs) for those who are unfamiliar with his work and are interested in checking out some of his music (and videos): CLICK
Sea Song (Wyatt – from Rock Bottom)
“You look different every time you come
From the foam-crested brine
Your skin shining softly in the moonlight
Partly fish, partly porpoise, partly baby sperm whale
Am I yours? Are you mine to play with?
Joking apart – when you’re drunk you’re terrific when you’re drunk
I like you mostly late at night you’re quite alright
But I can’t understand the different you in the morning
When it’s time to play at being human for a while please smile!
You’ll be different in the spring, I know
You’re a seasonal beast like the starfish that drift in with the tide
So until your your blood runs to meet the next full moon
You’re madness fits in nicely with my own
Your lunacy fits neatly with my own, my very own
We’re not alone”Anyway, I’m just checking out Buckethead’s official site now. Of course I’m kind of familiar with them (as I love much experimental rock and they are sometimes labeled that), but not that familiar with the music (been ages since I last heard any Buckethead).
