Sounds like the ‘slashdot’ effect – meaning you had your URL posted somewhere prominent on a popular site and had lots of vistors referred that way. Is it possible for you to chech the raw logs from that day to see if a lot of traffic was coming from one particular referrer?
Of course, it could have been an attempt at a DOS attack, or some rogue virus gone crazy (I’m still getting loads of hits from Code Red type viri.
