Not a very recent musical discovery (just felt like I wanted to post something at this site after a long time gone) but I find myself listening to a band from Japan called KoenjiHyakkei a lot.
Angherr Shisspa is a great album of theirs from 2005. It’s not going to appeal to most people, though. I discovered that band after getting into the whole Zeuhl scene that spans many decades and bands (lots of bands I love from this ‘genre’). It started in France, but there are quite a few good (good being subjective of course) modern bands from Japan that are given that label.
Zeuhl is a kind of music originating with the French band Magma that is a sort of jazzy “avant rock” that features throbbing bass and good drumming, often chanting and operatic vocals. Like with Magma, Koenjihaykkei invented a language to go along with the music. Anyway, Koenjihyakkei would grate on most ears (harder on the ears and much noisier than most Zeuhlish stuff), I would think — frenetic stuff — but for what it’s worth, here’s the band’s site: http://www.skingraftrecords.com/bandhtmlpages/koenjipg.html
A mysite page only featuring two songs: CLICK
And, concerts of theirs on youtube.com: CLICK
And since I mentioned Magma (Eskaton, Zao, Vortex, Kultivator, Paga etc. are all good too), here’s Magma’s site: http://www.seventhrecords.com/
Really wanted to see them in concert last year at a RIO (Rock in Opposition) festival last year, but couldn’t go.
Anyway, this lame post is really just being used an excuse to drop in again at this site, so probably best ignored (haven’t watched any sci-fi in ages, so… “The Riches” was a good show though, but not SF.)
Oh, I haven’t heard that many albums from 2007, but so far my fave is Alamaailman Vasarat’s Mahaan – http://www.vasarat.com/ It has been described as acoustic death metal, which doesn’t really give the picture. It’s weird, one might say.
Erm, yeah.
