Something I’ve wondered, too. What if Water weren’t exactly the opposite of Fire? If Fire represented Hell, what if Water represented not Heaven, but some sort of Purgatory? I know, I know, there was the “Heaven and Hell” episode. But I wonder because Water was outwardly a “good” place, but the Water dwellers were a little strange themselves. The people of Gametown and Boomtown seemed locked into their routines, as pleasant as they were, just as much as the people of Fire. Why did Root in Boomtown seem to recognize living Kai, and greet him with a kiss, IIRC? Damn, now my head hurts again.
I wouldn’t say that Water was Heaven, but I don’t think you could call it Purgatory either.
Purgatory seems like a place where you would still suffer, like a place between Heaven and Hell, one where you would spend your time in eternity in a boring waiting room.
Water was too exciting to be considered boring, I think it would be more likened to Heaven, but then not everything was perfect.
It could be that Water was just good, but not Heaven, and that Fire was just Evil and was not Hell.
