Put it this way; if you shared a flat with Rimmer you would probably end up despising, attacking and, eventually, killing him. The same might even apply for Stan or Lister. But the qualities you would hate in real life are extremely entertaining to watch, since it’s a) being tolerated by someone else and b) well written.
