KeymasterBefore we can begin to understand what the insect did when it became His Divine Shadow we must go back to the great insect wars. We know that the insect wars were concluded when humanity exterminated all insects every where they could find them. In short humanity committed total and near completes genocide on an entire species. Now we must attempt to understand what the insect saw and felt as this genocide was taking place. We can likely assume it would have seen its people slaughtered en mass in space. All their colonies and finally it might have witnessed the total destruction of the entire population of its home world and everything on it. He realized the weak, the strong, the innocent, the young, and the old were being murdered in cold blood by an alien species.
After or during the complete annihilation of his species the insect believing completely it was the very last survivor of its species escaped the slaughter. Now it likely drifted though the vacuum of space for centuries all alone only with the nightmares of what it saw as it escaped to fill its thoughts. We can assume what it felt very shortly after it escaped. It would likely first feel complete and total anguish and guilt verging on the extreme suicidal. Then after enough time had passed those feelings would soon turn into sadness, remorse, and then anger. The insect would have nothing but centuries to dwell on its anger. It would use its anger to keep its self from feeling all that anguish and thusly feeling weak. Soon this anger could no longer be a temporary hold his mind it would consume its mind and explode into a very sharp and focused rage.
In short all the anger and range consumed it and what every measure of compassion or respect for any form of life other than its own was now swallowed up completely by the darkness that its rage had turned into. Now it is important to keep in mind the insect would not become His Divine Shadow until a group of humans by random chance would run into on a planetoid. The insect had not gone over the edge yet because it could not act to full fill its need for swift and total cruel revenge. But when the insect transferred its self into a human body it now could take full advantage of the situation. The insect possessing a human body would eventually create a Divine Order.
The insects order only had one goal in mind, to make humanity suffer as much as possible all the while working tirelessly to achieve its eventual re-birth in which it would end humanities suffering with the same genocide it inflicted upon its species. While it may seem that this plan could only have been conceived of by a sane mind, keep in mind that the insect was totally obsessed with destroying all humans. This is exactly what it sounds like; obsession is more often than not linked to massive physiological disorders. Which can be then safely labeled ‘insanity’ “lacking reasonable thought” by definition. It however can be argued that the insect show remarkable reasoning skills by creating a large empire that would nearly be the device that would carry out its plan some odd thousands of years after he conceived of it.
I would however suggest you keep in mind the insect was only reasonable unto its self. It would only listen to its own decisions and probably only on very rare occasions would it listen to anyone else besides it. Now in conclusion how would the insect be found in a court of law? I would have to say probably a very sympathetic jury might find the insect guilty by reason of insanity and in all likelihood it would be locked away for the rest of its life. So after all this psychoanalytical mumbo jumbo what conclusion can we draw on about the Insects State of mind? I feel like that question is best left up each individual but as for me I do feel very sorry for the insect and understand what it did it did out of feelings of sadness and anger none of us can quite understand. GuestThat wasn’t a post it was a college thesis, made for good reading though.
If anyone needs their praying mantis pyscho-analyzed, then slopmaster is the person you need…only kidding.
Excellent post, and offer’s an intriguing insight into why HDS did what he did, especially when you take into account the fact that humans have been swatting wasps and stepping on ants for thousands of years, I think HDS has good reason to be angry.
One thing though, maybe the insect was not capable of emotions and just felt a natural compulsion to kill, Human or not.

GuestSounds like you’re gonna try the Insanity Defense. Good luck with that!

See, that’s what I think. It has been implied throughout LEXX (particularly Season 2) that one of the basic drives of insects is to kill humanity. For example, Mantrid, who isn’t imprinted with the identity of any one particular insect, still has the insect urge to destroy humanity. All of the insects used in LEXX that aren’t violent or agressive toward humans (save for the butterfly in 2.20, which I think is merely symbolic) have been bioengineered and altered by humans. Nowhere is it implied in the series that humans instigated the insect wars, and it is the insects that are painted in the negative light. HDS isn’t acting in response to the genocide of his “people,” he is merely changing tactics in his approach. HDS and the insects (and the essence loaded into Mantrid) provided the “evil” counterpart to the “good” humans throughout Seasons 1 & 2. They weren’t meant to be any more sympathetic than, say, Emperor Palpatine in the Star Wars series. In fact, they are meant to be *less* sympathetic because they are not human in the least and have nothing in common with us, other than physical traits.

If I were a lawyer I bet I could get my client off on using the insanity defense.

GuestThanks for the analysis of the insects.
The insanity defense works about 2 times out of ten (or so).
Mantrid and HDS are better off hiring Johnnie Cochran. Simpson’s jury made the holograms in I.W.H.S look impartial and rational. -
