Keymasternot sure if there’s been a thread about this movie before but i was just wondering if anyone had an opinion on it (or has even seen it for that matter). It came out around halloween 2001 but i don’t remember hearing anything about it then. This is surprising because it has some big name actors (Drew Barrymore, Patrick Swayze, Noah Wyle) in it.
From what i’ve heard very few people actually saw it in theatres. Anyways, my opinion is that a lot of people are missing out because its a pretty great and original movie, though the plot could be a bit more clear.
Its basically a sci-fi love story set in 1988. The main characters are a teenager and a 6-foot bunny rabbit. Being set in the 80s gives the makers the excuse to use some great music like Joy division, Echo and the bunnymen, The church, and to astounding effect, 2 songs by Tears for fears (worth the price of admission for me).
My advice is to rent the dvd and use the director’s commentary after the movie in case there’s any confusion.
if you saw it, what did you guys think?

You ought to, FG. You’d dig it.
It’s flawed, to be sure (the script could have used maybe one more rewrite), but the originality of its approach makes up for it, IMO. It was the victim of poor post-production trimming (the deleted scenes on the DVD are pretty essential, and really help to flesh out the film) and some stupendously lousy marketing (it was marketed as some suspenseful supernatural horror thing, and it’s really not that at all). The big names in the cast, to my mind, didn’t help the movie…while some of the faces of the cast were familiar, they’re not the folks you’d see in People Magazine for the most part, and seeing “celebrity” types like Drew Barrymore in the cast of this otherwise understated little piece of work tended to take me out of the world of the movie. Other than that, though, it’s an impressive film, and I’m looking forward to seeing more stuff from its writer/director, Richard Kelly.
