well, i managed to get through my Open University Summer School without blowing the north-east of England to bits!!!
went away with the intention of being good, and catching up with my coursework. that rapidly went out the window…. 🙄 did about 3 big experiments (magnetic field, Compton effect, resonance(built my very own little radio, there!!)) and about 3 small ones (speed of sound, velocity of an airgun pellet, Planck’s constant). by the time I’d finished in the lab or tutorials every day (working hard, honest!!!), i’d be about had it. time to wind down in the bar….
met lots of great people (one guy in particular i’ll tell you all about sometime-slightly serious subject!) and a few odd ones. one particular young gentleman from down south somewhere followed me and the friend i went with around all week. she wonders how i knew, but the guy kept staring at me. know that sensation when it feels like someone is trying to burrow into your soul from a distance? it was that. incredibly intense, and unnerving. he was probably hoping for something from us that he hadn’t got a hope in hell of getting.
Did the cathederal trip. apparently the cloisters at Durham Cathederal were the set for the Quidditch pitch in Harry Potter? (sad fact!!). a little dull, that trip- but if big, dusty old buildings are your thing…..oh, and the Venerable Bede is buried there…

my one big disappointment with these things is that despite meeting all these great people, nobody stays in contact really.
it’s a rare thing that i can actually meet so many people face to face that into the same things that i am. i hardly shut up all week!!! people now think i’m some kind of beer monster. they wouldn’t last long round here…..
the last night disco was a good laugh. Durham Uni runs a collegiate system, and the psychology students were stopping in a different college to us. apparently they think physics students are wierd, so after the disco, we went and invaded their common room to wind them up. didn’t get bed till 3.30am. woke up a 6.30am… how the hell i made it through that day, i don’t know!!
anyway, i had a great week. if any of you guys around the UK and Europe are considering doing an OU course and are unsure about doing any residential school component of your course, just do it-i can guarantee you’ll enjoy it! you learn lots, and have fun at the same time! 😀

What an experience! You may not have caused any really big explosions, but it sounds like you had a dynamite time just the same!
