To Question 1: That was the mouth of the Lexx. At that time, His Shadow’s priority was getting the Lexx fully-grown, so he could send it out bringing destruction to all those who would oppose the League of 20,000.

If you haven’t seen Giga Shadow yet, you may not want to spoil the surprise for yourself.If you don’t care, then read further.
His Shadow picked up a piece of Kai’s Insect Craft and said, “An insect… curious.”
I believe he said this because His Shadow himself consists of the Insect essence of the last survivor of the Insect Civilization (though individual Divine Shadows are not themselves supposed to be aware of this). He may have felt some peculiar familiarity with that Insect Craft.
A BETTER question might be, why do the Brunnen-G use Insect Craft in the first place? They fought the Insect Civilization with Insect Craft. Why do you think?
Odd thing about the mouth we see, at one point we see the Lexx jutting out from it’s bay, and yet the conveyor belt seems enclosed and not in the open…it could be the Gigashadow’s mouth.
I think HDS says it’s curious because of the irony of the Brunnen G attacking the last survivor of the insect civilization with insect modified craft.
