Guesthi! actually, i’m heading your way over this weekend from the UK…going to Lorsch…just thought i’d mention it…God, am i NOT looking forward to the roads through Belgium. probably will need a trip to the dentist’s afterwards…
oh, and while i’m here- does anyone know if HitchHiker’s is available on DVD? i’ll be looking to get sets of all my favourite classic series once i get a player…turn my flexible friend into a solid block!!!21st August 2002 at 5:37 am #59341Anonymous
InactiveYou can get Hitchikers on DVD in the UK for a while now (I got mine recently on a special offer from my computer magazine which had the first episode on the cover DVD (which I don’t get as I’ve been a CD subscriber for years and haven’t bothered to change since this PC has no DVD drive and I don’t use the one in my room for work often)) and I think they’re supposed to do in in the US too.

Guestapparently the nearest big city is Frankfurt. heard of Hippenheim? that’s just down the road (ish!)
..DVDs- didn’t really know what’s available. only really started considering what to get when i finally decided i really must have a player, a couple of months ago!! i can see myself ending up spending a small fortune…

ParticipantNever heard of Hippenheim, but I know Frankfurt, very nice city, I think. But it´s quite far away from where I live 🙁 about 3 hours by car. The city where I live is called Dormagen, maybe you´ve heard about. It´s the city where the first factory of Bayer Chemicals was build.
Where do you live in the UK? I was in Exmouth when I was younger, very nice there. Would like to go again sometime.Greets

Guesti live in the East Midlands, so i’m probably about as far away from Exmouth as you are from Frankfurt!!
So you’re a Hitch Hikers fan?? i remember seeing the show when i was much younger. can’t remember much about it, unfortunately- apart from the fact i enjoyed it. would love to see the show again, so once i’ve sorted myself out a DVD player, it’s one show on my ‘must buy’ list. am still known in some circles as Marvin the Paranoid Android. that’s one thing i rememember, the line “life? don’t talk to me about life..” 28th August 2002 at 1:01 am #59346Algeroth
ParticipantI saw it too long time ago (when I was 5 or 6 years old) but when the DVDs came out I bought them at once! But unfortunately the German version is cut 5 minutes each episode…so I´ve got to buy the GB version when I have enough money. Another very annoying thing about the German version is that the Making of´s don´t have any subtitles or things like that…very good for the people who can´t speak english or not very well… Sometimes I really wonder whats going on in the heads of the people who release films in Germany…

Guestthat’s one thing that puzzles me. it’s all very well diffent countries having different DVD formats, which in itself is a pain in the backside- but why does the actual material have to be different? it just means that those who aren’t able to play DVD’s from a different region will miss out, or will have to spend more money to rectify the situation! it’s crazy…
by the way, i had a bad weekend…. 30th August 2002 at 4:27 am #59348Algeroth
ParticipantYeah, that´s really bad… I spent money on the german version and two weeks later I heard that it is cut… So I have got to spend more money on the GB version…
You had a bad weekend? I am sorry about to hear that… Why? What went wrong?

Guest..had a rather interesting view of a German ditch.. can’t remember the road, but we were about 20-30 miles outside of Cologne (not far from Kerpen), coming of this slip road onto the autobahn (only doing about 20-25 mph), when the back end of the van started to slide. other half tried to correct it, but we ended up going off the road and rolling the van over. still can’t quite believe how lucky we were to walk out of it virtually unscathed.. InactiveMy sister once rolled her car onto it’s roof with her friends boyfriend in the other seat.
I’m regretting getting the UK Mononoke DVD, as unlike the US version there is only one subtitle track, the so-called ‘dubtitle’ which follows the dialog of Gaimen’s dub track, while in the US they also have a literal translation track. Apparently over here they’d have to pay twice to have both tracks passed through the BBFC and they didn’t bother.

Participantoh, I am very sorry about to hear that… But luckily you were not injured. But this is probably not the best way to start a holiday (if you were here on holiday)…
By the way, today I received the UK version of the Hitchhiker´s DVD and I will watch it tonight… I spend 40 Euro besides the 32 Euro I spend for the German version already…

Guesti have been on a bit of a nostalgia trip recently.. now i knowthat i have to buy Hitch Hikers on DVD!! it’s just so annoying that there may be different versions out there. mind you, seeing as it’s been so long since i last saw it, i probably wouldn’t know the difference anyway! however i can understand how frustrating it must be for those of you out there who have to buy two or more incomplete jigsaws to complete just one picture (if you know what i mean)

ParticipantYeah, I know what you mean…
So, I watched it yesterday and I HOPE that this is now the complete version… When I first saw it as a child on TV it was of course the German version, too… So there is no way for me to compare with anything, you know. But three of the episodes where even LONGER than originally broadcasted (so the packaging stated)…for example Ford´s penguin scene which for the first broadcast was cut out was now in…so I am pretty sure that this DVD is complete…at least I hope so. But there is no way to find out on the one hand and on the other hand I don´t want to spend money on a THIRD edition.
I think you should buy the UK version you won´t be disappointed! It features many specials like two making offs (together approx. 80 min.), a deleted scene, production notes subtitles, picture gallery etc…. compared to the German version there are dimensions between… -
