“to air is human” or is it “the air is human” ?? matt Gideon “Crusade”2nd February 2001 at 3:10 am #45544DalekTek790ParticipantThat’s how I found it! I was at school on a computer and had just seen a weird “new” show on Sci-fi Channel so I typed “Lexx” into AltaVista to see if there were any websites mentioning it, yet. I found a few sites including the SadGeezer one and discovered that “Lexx” had been on for a couple years in other countries.

I’ve lost count f how long and how many submissions, how many different locations too. There are sites listed now that didn’t even exist till long after I first submitted!

Copernic is a good resource since it compares results from multiple search engines, and is a good way to rate your own ranking. The FAST search is pretty good since it will spider your whole site quickly, it still lists the complete contents of my site and locations that don’t exist anymore..
[rant]Yahoo is such a pain, take a look at the listing, not many sites are listed considering the amount out there, and there are sites listed now that are fairly recent, Xandria’s being a very recent addition which is most annoying since a lot of the content is ripped straight from other sites. Lexx Universe has been down for ages, Lydia’s page hasn’t changed for a long time, and now appears to be down too… even Splarka had a hard time getting listed.[/rant]
Here is a good search engine resource: http://www.laisha.com/search.html
Thanks for the Ink tip Sad
Always had trouble with that one.. first time I got on it (never figured out how I managed that either) I was suddenly removed, possible because F9 (the location at the time) was down for a while. I also lost my AV listing, which is a real hard one to manage too.2nd February 2001 at 10:38 pm #45588AnonymousInactiveGoogle is a great resource, not only does it spider whole sites quickly it also caches pages so you can sometimes get information there from sites that are down. 3rd February 2001 at 6:33 am #45557AnonymousGuestYep, search engine positioning is REALLY hard to do well. The SG Guides have been up for three years and it’s only not that I’m able to start getting better positioning with some of the search engines. So, for those of you with websites that want to get higher, try the following:
Cat: Yahoo are snowed under with stuff and their people (the good ones) are too busy nowadays with paid submissions to care. This really annoyed me – I wasn’t in ANY of the pages after re-submitting every three months for years. In the end I sent an email message to their technical support explaining that my site was a large non-commercial resource used by many people and I had tried everything and wasn’t getting anywhere blah, blah, blah. The seemed to take notice and within two weeks I had achieved lots of high positions for each of the guides. Try submitting on a regular basis for a few months an dif that doesn’t work, try emailing tech support and ask them for advice.
AOL, MSN, Hotbot – all these use the Inktome search engine. DO NOT SUBMIT TO THESE SEARCH ENGINES. They are swamped by pornographers and will actually mark you DOWN the ranks if you submit. Go to http://www.positiontech.com/inktomi/ and pay the 20 dollars, you will be included in all the main inktome engiones and your site will be re-spidered every two days for when you make changes. I did this with the andromeda page and got wonderful results. EG. Just type ‘andromeda tv’ in the address window of your browser now (no www or http etc.) You’ll see that the page ranks 5th (MSN is an Inktome search engine).
Alta Vista are having massive prtoblems with their new ranking system. I have HUGE difficulty regiustering anywhere because the SG Guide pages have the same navigation on nearly all the pages. AltaVista therefore think that I’m spamdexing 🙁
Google – By far the most important search engine after Yahoo. They are used to rank pages in other searche engines too. Google is the most intelligent of the search engines and provided you have a lot of unique content on your page and don’t overuse keywords in your metatags, you should rank pretty highly with them.
Excite and Webcrawler – take months to register. I gave up two years ago. Excite use the
tag as the most important grading for the ranking of your webpage so make sure that your web page has a clear and relevant title tag. Lycos and the others I don’t rate much.
Hope that helps those of you that are having problems. One of the more useful directories (Open Directory) is moderated by a well respected LEXXian who regularly visits this forum. He could advise much better than me, the relevancy of submissions.
