Hi. I’m being forced to do an oral presentation in front of my Writers Craft class for my independent study. I wrote a short story with a fantasy theme and my teacher suggested that I discuss that there is a difference between Sci-fi and fantasy and how fantasy has branched off from the other and has begun to take a respectable position in popular culture. It hasn’t been as easy as I thought it would be.
So, any thoughts or suggests from you would be much appreciated. I just need something to get started off with. I would love you forever and you always have a place in my heart. Um, give me your views on the genres and your definitions. Anything is welcome. Please.

Oh, and do you think that it is illogical for a demon huntress to be carrying a staff(its magic) and a short sword. My neighbor thinks so, but I personally think she would be carrying more weapons with her, however, she’s going on a easy job. I don’t know.

Thanks for any opinions good or bad. There much needed like sleep. I’m running out of time you see and I have the tendency to procrastinate.

Sorry, can’t add much to the scifi/fantasy.
About the demon huntress. It’s going to vary with the character concept but I think the huntress is already carrying too much. I’d have her use one signature weapon, probably magical, that bestows bonuses when in combat with astrally active creatures. But I can think of a demon hunter variant that you might be thinking of. One that has a mixed bag of tools, tricks and weapons to use against her bounty.

im terrible at english since im dyslexic but i normally do quite well on essays, maybe you should do some research on when they split off into two different genres, or look at two different books, one fantasy, on science fiction and compare the differences and similarities?

Well, the only thing I can say is how I se on things!!!

I se it like this:
Fantasy is worlds that does not exist and where everything can happen!!! Mystical things and monsters usely exists in them!
There stile are rules to what can hapen but the whriter desides that! Fantasy is usaly books (Like “Bilbo” or “Wheel of Time”) or roleplayinggames (Like D&D) but also exist in movies! (Like “Wilow” and “Beastmaster”)

Sci/Fi is a posible future with mashines and things that could exist!!! (Like spaceships and outher things that doesent exist but could) Happens in our world and mostly in a future!
Sci/Fi usaly is movies (Like “Starship Troopers” and “Independance Day”) and TV series (Like “Star Trek” and “LEXX”) but alsoe books!!!

There is a big diference betwean Sci/Fi and Fantasy! But it usaly is combaind in movies or books!!! “Star Wars” is a great example of Sci/Fi and Fantasy! (A world that does not exist, with monstars and “magic”! But theres mashines and a fealing of future in it!!!)

Well, this is just how I se on it!!! Outher peapol se things diferent!!!

well, that is an ambitious topic! first of all you have to decide which came first as the two frequently overlap…although science fiction usually takes place in some future, and fantasy takes place in some world that doesn’t exist, they both often serve as allegory for problems and issues that are universal to any time and any place…dune for example, uses the spice as a metaphor for oil, with the fremen obviously arab culture descendants who control the oil, first quietly, and then openly…the tripod of power (the houses of the landsdraad, the bene gessirit, and the guild) are all superpowers manipulating economy and politics usually behind the scenes of the more or less figurehead emperor…and the sardaukar are a thinly veiled allusion to the ss, or any cultlike army…but fantasy serves the same purpose; all the arthurian legends are basically ideals that we all aspire to, and the human flaws that inevitably keep us from achieving these ideals…i guess the biggest difference between the two is the veneer of science in science fiction, variable depending upon the generation of writer, and the writer himself, as well as the more overtly political themes of science fiction…anyway, let us know what you come up with and good luck! oh, and it never hurts to have both a little magic, as well as a more banal back up just in case a girl can never be too prepared!

ps the master and margarita was banned for several years in russia because of its political overtones, and is usually billed as russian scifi, but i think it could be fantasy as well, might be worth looking at, as well as my personal favorite, clockwork orange, also technically science fiction…

Thanks for all your input so far. It has been helpful and very much appreciated. I agree with a lot of things that you are all saying and I am glad for your opinions. I’ve begun to do a bit on it and its slowly coming along. It has jump from my childhood experiences with it, the distinction between the two to how fantasy has one in its own. I think I’ll probably talk about the differents elements in fantasy next. More than likely I’ll delete it and start over. I really worried about getting nervous in front of everyone. I hate speaking in front of people.

About the demon huntress. She does have a signature weapon which is her staff that allows her to banish demons etc. I think I’ll just stick with it and the sword because it is essential to the plot. She lets go of the staff which makes the reader believe she is going to spare the life of a beautiful monster that she comes across but she is really getting out her sword to kill it. It has implications against society and human nature and all those other fun things.

ps I don’t know if I want to admitt this, but Bolandria is really a friend of mine who saw me on this site and decided to make me angry in an attempt to get back at me for playing a joke on him(that he fully deserved) which I really don’t want to discuss the details of. He really isn’t a disturbed individual just slightly off key. I’m really, really sorry and promise to punish him for his misdeeds and give him a firm lecture about disturbing you all with his mad babblings.

Once again, thank-you a million times over and I’ll tell you how goes after Friday.

Don’t worry. I gave up picking other peoples noses long ago.

So, I did my presentation. Well, like I always say, any oral you can walk away from without puking is a good oral. My teacher said it was delightful and I think that’s a good sign.
Thanks.
