Proposed Soylent Green sequel…

    Source: Sci Fi Wire

“Blade: Trinity writer/director David Goyer told SCI FI Wire that his proposed remake and update of the classic 1973 SF movie Soylent Green will pick up where the original film left off: with the well-known revelation that “Soylent Green is people!” “I will say that the reveal at the end of the first movie happened at the end of our first act,” Goyer said in an interview. “So the first movie is kind of the first act of our film, and then it’s about what happens afterwards.”

The first movie, set in a dystopian future, centers on a cop (Charlton Heston) who investigates a murder, leading to the gruesome discovery about the principal food source of the overburdened population. The film’s surprise ending is by now familiar to audiences, “of course, which is why you can’t have that be the punch line anymore,” Goyer said.

Goyer added that he won’t write or direct the remake, but will instead act as producer under his just-signed one-year first-look deal with Warner Brothers. Goyer also wrote the script for the upcoming Batman Begins for Warner, which Christopher Nolan is directing. Blade: Trinity, the third movie in the vampire franchise, is being released by Warner’s sister company, New Line, on Dec. 8.”

I’d worried they’d do a remake before, though possibly with a new twist since the old one is so well known. For instance, Soylent Green is really green soya beans — Yuck!!!. However, the idea of a sequel doesn’t leave the same bad taste in my mouth.

“You’ve got to warn everyone and tell them! Soylent Green is to be made into a sequel! A sequel!” Or will it?

More like a slave to bad puns. 🙂

Now some insignificant food for thought from a very stuffed up head (very bad cold): While it’s not really a “sequel” of course (as I said before in aid of the lame “Soylent Green is sequel!” rhyming gag) and I don’t think a straight sequel would work well anyway, I do quite like their idea for remaking/reworking stuff from the original film for the first act (one needn’t watch the original) and then continuing with the story in the following acts. No doubt they’ll significantly change a plot point or two or three for the story to continue in a satisfactory way.

I wanted to buy the Soylent G. DVD today to try to figure out what direction they might take since it’s been so many years since I last saw the flick… Couldn’t find it so I bought Logan’s Run instead which was another film there was talk of reimagining — based on the book — that project fizzled, I wonder if this one will?

Det. Thorn: “It’s green. Soylent Green is green! They’re making our soylent out of green. You’ve gotta tell them. Soylent Green is green friggin’ soylent! You’ve gotta tell them!”
