….the words “critically acclaimed”. how many shows can you think of that have been labelled with this badge, only for them to disappear without a trace? off the top of my head-
-Farscape
-Odyssey 5
..and what does this suggest about the current state of sci-fi? i know that’s a subject that’s cropped up before, but i think we really need to keep on it. hopefully the powers-that-be will take notice of us fans eventually…..

Farscape was *critically* acclaimed? No, really? Too weird.

ahhh the power of milk, err rhetoric…

You’ll also see “Highest rated new comedy on TV!!!!!”

Of course it’s the only new comedy show that week, if no one had watched it, the fact still stands….. I think Comedy Central used that for “I’m with Busey” which has since been cancelled.

“Critically Acclaimed new drama!!”

Lets go to the big book on this one.

Of, relating to, or characteristic of critics or criticism: critical acclaim; a critical analysis of Melville’s writings

So all that means is someone looked really hard at it, and liked it! Heck that’s about as general as they come.

It’s not a lot different from the commercials that show supermodels sucking down beers next to Joe Six-Pack in a spa in the Hinterlands. Or that new Carls Jr. commercial that shows some supermodel riding a Bucking Bronco while eating a burger in ecstacy.

WTH does that have to do with hamburgers?

Commercials and advertising get more and more ludicrious every day =/

No Sci-Fi here, but my favorite TV character to this day is the main character of Profit, which was “critically acclaimed”, “daring”, and “destined to change the way we look at television dramas” according to the ads. The head of Fox even called it the most disappointing cancellation he ever had to make. (Had to?)

Jim Profit was a corporate ladder-climber who could out-evil the Devil. His father raised him naked in a cardboard box with a hole cut out so he could watch TV, so all of his moral background was based on TV, (reminded me of John Savage’s morality all being based on Shakespeare in Brave New World).

Every episode he would frame somebody for something. He would be about to be caught and out of nowhere there would be a completely reasonable explanation that made it look like he was the victim of a witch hunt. Oh, and he was sleeping with his stepmother (widowed by him) and encouraging her heroin habit.

Anyway, people with Neilsen boxes couldn’t bring themselves to watch a show from the bad guy’s point of view, and advertisers were squeamish, so there it went. We didn’t even get the last 4 eps over here until 2002, but I missed them.

BTW, as an adult, he couldn’t stand TV.

GVSE was another one “critically acclaimed”, mostly for its cinematography and attempted revival of the split screen which 24 then picked up on. (Not saying they “stole” it from GVSE, just coincidence.) 24 is critically acclaimed, though, and they’re still on.

What about shows that get cancelled and then win Emmys? Is that critical acclaim?
