Well, all right, so despite my optimism in TV executives sanity, word has come down that Firefly has been cancelled by Fox.
But, before you threaten your computer screen with violence, listen up! There is hope that the show will be picked up by another network. I’m pulling for UPN or the WB. I put my foot down at the Sci Fi channel, gah!
What can you do, you wonder? Go here for many wonderful suggestions:
http://www.fireflysupport.com/Spread the word out on other boards. Ask people to post the positives of Firefly, what they like about it.
I really think this show is a quality science fiction program that could postively effect the quality of programs in the future. Please help to give it a chance.

I’m just hoping Firefly gets picked up by UPN since WB seems more family friendly. Anyway, I better get those postcards ready.Enjoy tonight’s ep,
Cheers!14th December 2002 at 8:28 pm #64629petParticipantDammit! I knew I shouldn’t have started watching Fox dead-slot Fridays. I hope they’re planning on DVD’s, cuz for the next few years I’m not getting attached to anything that isn’t already finished shooting. I ignored all new shows between Profit and Lexx, and I can do it again.
I hope for all the other fan’s sakes it goes to UPN or WB, but my service doesn’t carry either of those, so it looks like I’m going back to Space 1999. At least it’s suitably weird.
I’m gonna miss Jayne….

I don’t know if Lexx ruined me for TV or what the deal is, but there sure doesn’t seem to be too much out there anymore.

Now, go finish your hot chocolate and go to bed. I’ll read you a bookie-poo later.

More and more channels jockeying to catch viewers. When someone has a flash hit, everyone races out to copy it (Survivor, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Trading Spaces, etc.). The ratings are going down all across the board, so shows aren’t being given nearly as much support as they used to be. Too bad Firefly is not a patron show for Fox – Enterprise gets comparable ratings, and is in no danger of cancellation (yet).
Sadly, I don’t know if anything short of a total collapse in the television system can remedy it. Then again, that might not be such a bad thing.
I don’t think Sci Fi shows could survive in a DVD-only format, either. To break even, a single season of Farscape would need to sell over 300 million copies.* Considering the viewership for Farscape is less than 2 million in the US, it’s unlikely to sell well.
* 1.5 mil/ep * 22 eps / 100USD. And, yes, I’m ignoring merchandising revenue.
