For those US kids who have access to the Cartoon Network, I suggest you keep your eyes open late Sundays and Thursdays. For this is when Cartoon Network airs its Adult Swim block of programming, and it’s got some of the most outrageously funny stuff on the air. Usual suspects (and my favorites) are Space Ghost Coast to Coast, The Brak Show and Sealab 2021. However, a new show was just added to the line-up that some here may find extremely amusing…

Welcome to Eltingville! is written by, and was created by, independent comics legend Evan “Dork” Dorkin (creator of Milk and Cheese among others). It takes place in the small town of Eltingville, and centers on the Eltingville Club, a group of 4 loserly sci-fi and comic book-loving geeks who meet in member Bill Dickey’s parents’ basement to play D&D and hold their meetings. This week’s installment had the group nearly split up over the fact that Josh promised that he’d just received a video of everyone’s favorite sci-fi starlets and scream queens in the buff (“Tasha Yar…naked?????”) which turned out to be old episodes of The Hair Bear Bunch, and later Josh and Bill engage in a trivia battle over who has dibs on the newly-arrived 12-inch Boba Fett action figure that just came in at the local comic book store. My descriptions don’t (and *can’t*, because I don’t want to give away too much) do it justice, but it’s amazingly funny. I can see some people saying that Dork’s just using stereotypical fan-boy behavior to paint sci-fi fandom in a bad (or at least *geeky*) light, but I’d say that his characters (who originated in appearances in Dork’s many comics) are funny in that they’re *extremely* accurate. I *know* these guys. Helped helm sci-fi conventions with them. Hung out with them at other cons. If you know *anyone* who is more than passively interested in sci-fi, comics, and the various and sundry things associated with them, then you know these people too. In fact, it may hit too close to home for some. I know I had to hang my head a bit when Bill and Josh battled it out with trivia questions, since I knew too many of the answers myself (“Who directed The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies?” “Ray Dennis Steckler! Where was Dawn of the Dead filmed?” “Pittsburgh! What was the original release title of Dr. Butcher, MD?”) That is, until I realized that Dork had to know the answers himself, else he couldn’t have written the episode (and the questions were so off-the-wall that he’d have to know these tidbits just to write the questions).

I recommend this series highly. A program about Sad Geezers *for* Sad Geezers.

Yes! I saw that cartoon too! I was channel-surfing when I spotted it. I said to myself, “I recognize that artwork! Where have I seen it? Was it on Dahria? No, though the line quality and animation is somewhat similar…” It wasn’t until the end when I saw Dorkin’s credit that I recognized it all. It’s brilliant. I’m so happy that Dork has made it to television! It was a pleasant suprise for me. Dorkin was starting to scare me with his depressing stories in recent Dork comics.

My favorite character has to be the little sister with the voodoo dolly! I wonder if we’ll get to see the serialkiller-family sitcom… or was it on there and I missed it?

I was floored when he made that Ray Dennis Steckler reference. A good follow-up question would have been, “What was Ray’s stage name in that same movie?” The episode of MST3K featuring that movie, The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies has to be one of my favorites. (“Wendy Carlos as Isabella Duncan in Glenn or Glenda!”)It is the worst tribute to The Cabinet of Dr. Calligari I have ever seen!

It’s a show for sad geezers everywhere!

Dork has some history with the Cartoon Network, actually. He, with Sarah Dyer, contributed scripts for several episodes of Space Ghost Coast to Coast.

I thought that the last ish of Dork was back in the light-hearted mode again after the completely serious and depressing previous issue (I think it’s the one where Bill Dickey of the Eltingville club gets “deprogrammed” by 2 muscle-bound former fanboys). I haven’t checked for a new Dork in a couple months, though.

I think they’re the “Murder Family?” I can’t remember their exact name right off hand, and don’t have my comix handy. At any rate, I didn’t see them this week (though I must have left the room for a few minutes, as I don’t remember the little sister, except from the opening credit sequence). I’m checking it out again on Thursday (11 pm Eastern!).

That would be Cash Flagg. Ray’s a personal favorite of mine. He acted under the Cash Flagg moniker in a number of movies, and really shone in The Thrill Killers. He also shot several Arch Hall, Jr. movies, including Wild Guitar (co-starring under the name Cash Flagg again) and the perennial MST3K fave, Eegah!

Heh I caught part of this block of programing. It started with that Baby Blues show, which is based on a comic strip that isnt funny at all, yet the show is hilarious. Hehe “So what does your gut feeling tell ya son?”, Dad “Be a jerk”, Son “Id go with that feeling”, Dad.

The Eltingville show was good, the trivia contest they did was suprisingly accurate. I actually have that Star Wars record and “R2D2 we wish you a merry xmas” was corny as hell, but the “what do you get a wookie for xmas when he already owns a comb” was comical.
