KeymasterLots of ‘Please Help’ boxes have gone up all over the site in the hope of raising some extra cash to help pay for the server and bandwidth (currently 1Gb per day).
The request for donations may seem a little tacky at the moment, but costs are seriously eating into my beer money
I’ll keep the boxes up for a few weeks to see how things go.

GuestSaddy, I said in another post that I would never give money to a pay site, however, I’m happy to give some of my beer money to keep that from happening here.
I don’t have a credit card, so I was wondering whether you could investigate the possibility of a Direct Debit charge? I’d be happy to set one up for £5 a month.
But if it turns out that other’s can’t or won’t support you, and you have to turn into a pay site, then I’m afraid I wouldn’t continue.
Good Luck Saddy, maybe sponsorship of some kind could avoid the inevitable.
In the meantime, let’s hope you get the help you need.
Please let me know about the DD and I’ll get something set-up.

GuestGod help us if this turns into a pay site I wish I could help, but the problem is I can’t Direct Debit nor own a credit card. The best I could do is wire some money. Could you direct me as to how to do that, ‘cos I’ll be damnned if I can’t do anything for Sadgeezer.com. God save the Geezers!

GuestThanks Ryan and Robin! 🙂
The Keep the site free wont affect the SadBOARD, but would affect things like the download areas (which is where most of the bandwidth goes).
Since most of the bandwidth is used for visitors downloading winamps skins, pics and soundfiles, I considered asking for a small fee to help maintain and expand that area.
However, your comments have made me think that it’s prolly best simply to ask for a donation to help support the site. It sounds less threatening and yet is still true.
Please don’t worry about the SadBOARD being a subscription site. That will never happen. My biggest concern is to make sure that me and Newkate have the funds to continue with the site as a whole (but we’ve been in this situation before and usually come through it).
I think lots of sites are finding the same problem. As their popularity increases, a whole range of issues are created; managing a 2000 page site for instance, limits the amount of time I can spend on reviews and SadBOARD.
Squishy and Son of Bester, thankyou for your very generous offers, but $3 is the maximum I would consider as a donation from peeps, and even then, only if they already had on-line payment facilities set-up. Your patronage (as with many other members of the Board) is much more important!

I’ve edited the box and changed the word ‘Free’ to ‘alive’.

ParticipantI did my duty and donated $3. And because I feel high and mighty, I just want to remind everyone who regularly posts here to donate some spare change too.
My question is how often will a fund-raiser be needed? I think it’s a worthy idea.

GuestOk, Saddy, but if you need it then I’ll be only too pleased to contribute, and as we are living in the same country I’m sure we can find a way for me to send you something.
Besides £5 a month would be worth it, rather that than have other people being deprived of enjoying the site, Ok it may never come to that, but ya never know.

Be careful with PayPal, I’ve personally seen them withhold money and freeze accounts. On my site we were using PayPal to fund our EZboard accounts as well as our “guild”. Unfortunatly we had 1 person complain out of 212 contributers(she entered 200 instead of 20) and our accounts were frozen. Lawsuit still pending against PayPal.
In any event I would love to contribute to this site, if you have an address or other account Id be happy to cut you a check or use my CC, as long as its not PayPal Email/IM me if you dont want to make an address public I really want to help this site keep going.
PS: This isnt meant to scare anyone, its only directed for Tony and those that have PayPal accounts.
Donating TO PayPal is NOT a problem. Its only when trying to withdraw money from the accounts there has been problems.

GuestI have just made a $3.00 donation and will probably make another one in a few days…. I love all things Sadgeezer and am happy to be able to contribute something to my favorite site!!!
Don’t feel bad about having to ask for help, Saddy, things can get very tight and you gotta do what ya gotta do!!
If I did’nt send a few dollars along, I’d only spend it on something less worthy, like ice cream!!

GuestThanks NB1
Though NewKate (the missus) might argue that ice cream was more important

What a refreshing attitude. From those of us who have no way to pay online but would love to help out, this relieves some guilty feelings. Thanks.

That sure was a scary story. Deb’s story was pretty bad, but I’ve heard worse! On the whole though, PaPal is a fairly reputable company that is struggling to deal with the govenment restrictions on money movement following Sept 11th and other government fraud initiatives.
But I think you are right and the PayPal account will never have more than a few dollars in it.
