Nowhere Man: Science: Proximity Bracelet

 When Thomas Veil’s attempted hijacking of a plane backfires on him, he awakes in a city called New Phoenix, which is completely populated with other “disenfranchised” people, in other words, every citizen has had his or her identity erased.

An ID bracelet is worn by all residents of New Phoenix. It sets off an alarm when a resident crosses a yellow warning line. Paul, the elected leader of New Phoenix, calls it merely a warning, since they can’t offer their residents protection if they leave the city limits, but through some clever experimentation Tom discovers the bracelets attract laser weapons which destroy them if they go too far. What he doesn’t know is that each bracelet is individually assigned, so when his is destroyed, the leaders are alerted and start a quiet manhunt for him.
