Andromeda: Cultures: Vedrans

This review is likely to be out of date since it hasn’t been updated since Season 2 (!?)

The Vedrans look very peculiar indeed. They resemble a mythical Greek figure called the centaur, a four legged, hoofed creature with a humanoid upper body. (In fact they may have once traveled to Earth long ago and scared the living daylights out of a few Greek farmers for all we know!)

Their lower bodies have a covering of soft feathers and the males have brightly coloured and cover their heads and backs.

Long ago, this ancient race conquered much of their home galaxy. The males are generally less intelligent that then females who enjoy a life of attention and leadership – there are approximately 6 males to one female!

if you were to meet one in a pub, you would politely congratulate it for having nice hooves…. Ok, ok, maybe not, but what the hell do you say to a geezer shaped like a horse!

This probably accounts for the aggressive tendency of the male. Conquering worlds beyond the stars tends to have a commanding effect on prospective mates and lets face it, there were a LOT of frustrated Vedran dudes!

In the family group, there are usually six males but there can be only onE mate! the other five perform helper duties HELPER DUTIES! I just can’t believe that! The sexual urges of these geezers must be painful beyond belief! – it’s not like they can relieve themselves (not without having extremely long arms!)

The ruler of the Vedran Empire is therefore ALWAYS a female. Vedran females rarely leave their homeworld, but the males employ the farthest reaches of the empire in search of adventure and experience that may improve their social standing back home.

Frustrations aside, the Vedrans were the founding members of the Systems Commonwealth and one of the most ancient and intellectual races in the three galaxies. They are much revered (and feared) and were the first species to discover ‘slipstream drive’. They were however, an aggressive warlike people and not the slightest bit benevolent. They conquered and destroyed for hundreds of years before realising that it would be more profitable to trade peacefully with other races than subjugate them.

They originate from a world called Tarn Vedra, Robert Hewitt Wolfe explains it better, “…So when they got hold of slipstream drive this was not a good thing for the galaxy because they basically went around and kicked everybody else’s heads in for a couple hundred years, but at the end of that they founded the Vedran Empire,” he says. “The Vedran Empire, while founded with a kind of militaristic bent, did establish first contact with a number of other races, and after running the empire for a few hundred years and having all sorts of bad things happen and realizing that this idea of making everybody follow all their rules wasn’t working out too well, reforms came to town in the form of the Systems Commonwealth.”
