I’ll run down the list and attempt to explain.

quote
Five complete and uncut episodes
Not really a special feature, but I’ll address it anyway. Theirs is on 2 discs, ours is on one, theirs has 5 eps, ours has 4. Not that big of a difference, unless you see a comparable number of episodes on 2 discs as a huge advantage.

quote
The Story So Far …
I actually wrote a long piece covering the first 4 movies, which was intended to be included as liner notes in S2V1. The Powers That Be decided that the added print expense wasn’t worth it. It was later edited and used on Acorn’s website here.

quote
The Making of LEXX
Which, I’m assuming, is the same as the one featured on our release.

quote
Commentary — Mantrid — Brian Downey and Lex Giggeroff
One of the things that I wish we could have worked out. Kudos to Lee and Contender for nabbing this. It was hard enough getting the interviews for our discs scheduled and shot, though, and this didn’t seem to be feasible at the time we were working on the vids.

quote
LEXX FAXX
Don’t know what this is. May be comparable to the trivia section we have.

quote
Gallery of Stills
The photo stills we were provided with for Season 2 were primarily screen grabs and effects shots, which weren’t really any different from what was seen in the episodes. There weren’t really any production photos or anything like that made available to us, and to use the images we were given seemed redundant. I think we kind of made up for this feature with the storyboards and production sketches, though.

quote
Biographies–Zev, Zev to Xev, Xev, Mantrid (Part 1)
There’s a Zev to Xev section, a bio covering Zev and Xev…plus bios of Stan, Kai, 790 and the LEXX, *plus* bios of the actors. The only one we missed was Mantrid, and I think we made up for that.

quote
Original Salter Street Trailers
We received one trailer, and I intentionally left it off. It was comprised of nothing but clips from episodes, which actually spoiled details of the overall story. It didn’t appear to be something that was intended for public consumption, and was designed more for industry promotion. It had no real flow, and didn’t add anything that anyone wouldn’t get from watching the episodes themselves. I thought it was a waste of time. So it was left off. I did push for the inclusion of a Season 3 trailer on S2V5 because it was edited better, flowed nicely, didn’t reveal too much about the storyline, and served as a nice link between the two seasons.

These are features on our discs as well, with a French language track.

So let’s see. 5 episodes instead of 4, but on 2 discs instead of 1 (which makes the set more expensive, but over the period of all the releases it works out about even). They have a “Story so far” feature we don’t, but it was prepared and is available for free (and the “Rated LEXX” bits should cover pretty much the same info). They have a commentary we don’t have, but we do have the “Rated LEXX” segments and interviews. They have LEXX FAXX and we have trivia questions. They have galleries of stills and we have production sketches and storyboards. They have trailers, we have one on the last disc. They have bios covering Zev/Xev and Mantrid, we have bios covering the entire LEXX crew and the actors, but we left out Mantrid.

There are things that they have that we don’t, there are things that we have that they don’t. I think that they’re pretty comparable releases. The commentary is the only thing that I think is a huge advantage over our releases, but we do have filmed interviews on each disc, and other features that kind of bridge that gap.

Sorry if this comes across as a bit defensive, but that’s the position I’ve been put in. I have worked my ass off on these discs, and have tried to make sure that the supplements were interesting and of value. I think that, from the looks of things, Lee and Contender have also done a great job, and I’d be interested to see their discs.
