Original Salter Street Trailers

Picture format: 4:3

Language: EnglishWhy do the UK special features for the Lexx DVD’s go so much further and well ours just stop short of greatness. I mean I am gratefull we have them at all but its kind of unfair that the country that made Lexx a hit gets a little shaffted on the special features end. So I ask why didn’t we (US) get some of that stuff?

GuestCheckout the amazon.c o.uk link
I must concur, Aleck. The UK DVDs kick the American DVDs in the nuts and then pees in it’s face. Even the cover art is better and it’s a boxed set of two DVDs with 5 episodes and tons of extras.
Great job Lee and Contender!!
(sorry, I had to edit because the url at the top of the post was deforming the page)

I’ll run down the list and attempt to explain.
quote
Five complete and uncut episodes
Not really a special feature, but I’ll address it anyway. Theirs is on 2 discs, ours is on one, theirs has 5 eps, ours has 4. Not that big of a difference, unless you see a comparable number of episodes on 2 discs as a huge advantage.
quote
The Story So Far …
I actually wrote a long piece covering the first 4 movies, which was intended to be included as liner notes in S2V1. The Powers That Be decided that the added print expense wasn’t worth it. It was later edited and used on Acorn’s website here.
quote
The Making of LEXX
Which, I’m assuming, is the same as the one featured on our release.
quote
Commentary — Mantrid — Brian Downey and Lex Giggeroff
One of the things that I wish we could have worked out. Kudos to Lee and Contender for nabbing this. It was hard enough getting the interviews for our discs scheduled and shot, though, and this didn’t seem to be feasible at the time we were working on the vids.
quote
LEXX FAXX
Don’t know what this is. May be comparable to the trivia section we have.
quote
Gallery of Stills
The photo stills we were provided with for Season 2 were primarily screen grabs and effects shots, which weren’t really any different from what was seen in the episodes. There weren’t really any production photos or anything like that made available to us, and to use the images we were given seemed redundant. I think we kind of made up for this feature with the storyboards and production sketches, though.
quote
Biographies–Zev, Zev to Xev, Xev, Mantrid (Part 1)
There’s a Zev to Xev section, a bio covering Zev and Xev…plus bios of Stan, Kai, 790 and the LEXX, *plus* bios of the actors. The only one we missed was Mantrid, and I think we made up for that.
quote
Original Salter Street Trailers
We received one trailer, and I intentionally left it off. It was comprised of nothing but clips from episodes, which actually spoiled details of the overall story. It didn’t appear to be something that was intended for public consumption, and was designed more for industry promotion. It had no real flow, and didn’t add anything that anyone wouldn’t get from watching the episodes themselves. I thought it was a waste of time. So it was left off. I did push for the inclusion of a Season 3 trailer on S2V5 because it was edited better, flowed nicely, didn’t reveal too much about the storyline, and served as a nice link between the two seasons.

These are features on our discs as well, with a French language track.
So let’s see. 5 episodes instead of 4, but on 2 discs instead of 1 (which makes the set more expensive, but over the period of all the releases it works out about even). They have a “Story so far” feature we don’t, but it was prepared and is available for free (and the “Rated LEXX” bits should cover pretty much the same info). They have a commentary we don’t have, but we do have the “Rated LEXX” segments and interviews. They have LEXX FAXX and we have trivia questions. They have galleries of stills and we have production sketches and storyboards. They have trailers, we have one on the last disc. They have bios covering Zev/Xev and Mantrid, we have bios covering the entire LEXX crew and the actors, but we left out Mantrid.
There are things that they have that we don’t, there are things that we have that they don’t. I think that they’re pretty comparable releases. The commentary is the only thing that I think is a huge advantage over our releases, but we do have filmed interviews on each disc, and other features that kind of bridge that gap.
Sorry if this comes across as a bit defensive, but that’s the position I’ve been put in. I have worked my ass off on these discs, and have tried to make sure that the supplements were interesting and of value. I think that, from the looks of things, Lee and Contender have also done a great job, and I’d be interested to see their discs.

Guest“Sorry”?.. “a bit defensive”?…
What the hell kinda pussy-whipped talk is that? and you call yourself a LEXX fan?
So what will the Season 3 covers look like? Any different design from the last set? other than a cut-out against a starfiled.

As I’ve noted above, the two releases are pretty comparable. They have a commentary, we don’t. We have interviews, they don’t. Etc. And if you want to be juvenile and insulting, you’re doing a damn fine job of it. Slap yourself on the back.

I’ll admit that their cover art is better. I’m not a fan of ours, and I’ll tell you that I’m not really a fan of our S3 cover art either. But if you’re judging a DVD on its cover art, you’re nit-picking. So, they’ve got 2 discs with 5 eps. We have one disc with 4. Boy howdy, that’s a big difference. And the number of extras they have is basically the same as ours, and some of ours are more in-depth than theirs (bios, for instance). So I don’t really see any kicking or peeing going on here.

GuestTsk tsk, Aleck, where has your sense of humor gone? I guess the days of speaking with tongue in cheek are gone and it’s all my fault.
I guess I shoulda known that with all the ill-blood between me and others you would have taken that offensively. I just meant that you don’t need to apologize for your DVDs and you were being too polite about it in doing so. I know you’re very proud of your work and I have enjoyed the DVDs very much. I really didn’t mean to insult you or your work.
Apologies for offending you man, but please don’t make anything more of it than that.

GuestWell, as an owner of the UK DVDs, I must say that from what I’ve heard on the board; Aleck’s menu designs sound much better than ours. Plus don’t forget, that if you live in the US; you already have nearly the whole of season 2 while we’re only up to Lafftrak. I guess one of the advantages of the UK discs is that Contender also have the rights to Season 1 so we’ll eventually get a nice spine picture covering all two(?)seasons. But as a fan, I’d eventually like to own both the Uk and US versions.

GuestYour right Aleck, I’m sorry. Most of what is in the UK DVD’s we have. However that commentary isn’t (sob). Hehe and also that cover art is pretty cool but hey I like ours so far so sorry for jumping the gun there.

ParticipantOkay, smart-asses! Design yer own DVD cover!
Here’s the template for DVD covers and booklet inserts:

CLICK
FOR A LARGER VIEWTake a look at the Contender UK cover:

As an artist, I have to state right here and now that I like the Acorn covers much better. The Contender cover looks extremely tacky. It looks like they couldn’t decide on a colour scheme. It looks like the cover of a potential Lexx karaoke/party disc. I almost expect to see Rip Taylor in the background throwing confetti!
BTW, I wonder what brand of plastic DVD case the UK Contender discs have. The Acorn discs use Alpha. The Koch discs use Amaray. You can tell which brand is used by looking for the name molded on the inside of the case. Amaray is written on the inside of the spine; Alpha is written on the inside of the case, beneath the disc mount. Personally, I prefer the Amaray cases for my own DVD authoring.

GuestThanX, FG. If only my printer would allow me to print out in that size. The Koch DVDs are the worse. The design is ok but they use the same pic on all 4 DVDs. I have to say that I prefer the Contender covers. I also had a problem with the cases Acorn used for the first 3 releases. I don’t know what kind of cases they are called but it’s hard to get the DVD out without feeling like you’re going to break it and unfortunately a lot of the big studios use similar cases especially with the double disc sets. The volume 4 case mine had was much better. I also prefer the kind of cases Koch used. Know where I can purchase some like that?
I’d love to see your designs. Maybe I’ll put mine on my website if I make any.
Rip Taylor? You know they probably wanted to get him for the show but he probably asked for too much money

This is what the cover art loks like for the DVD cases inside the boxed set. Rip Taylor? Dude that background is just the inside of the LEXX, so are you saying the interrior of the LEXX reaks of Rip Taylor-esque design? Then again.. maybe that’s what they wanted

GuestI too am in the UK and I saw the UK DVD which I am going to buy very soon. It had 6 uncut episodes (4 on the first disc, 2 on the second.) and commentary on episodes and all the other features mentioned all for a Insane low price of 19.99 at Woolworths, the cover is much better too with a nice design with Xev only on the front. This DVD looks amazing, probably my 2nd best DVD of the year next to Lord of the Rings I say congratulations to the people who made it. It’s outstanding quality and Value for money.

No, I didn’t apologize for my DVDs. I said that I apologized if my tone came across as defensive. I don’t have anything to apologize for with the DVDs, so there’s no need for me to apologize. I know that everyone involved, from Salter down to us at Acorn, did the best work we could possibly do with what we had. I regret that some things that Contender were able to nab weren’t available to Acorn at the time, and there are some bits that I’m happier about than others, but I’m overall very happy with what we do have.

No problem. No need to apologize. I knew, after seeing the rundown of features online, that I’d have to end up explaining why there’s no commentary, and it wasn’t until I started going over the features in my head that I realized that we did share pretty much the same type of bonus materials (at least in quantity, not having seen their discs).
