OK, I’m going to be a bit cynical here so take it for what it’s worth:

SciFi ain’t gonna move heaven and earth (read that as spend money) promoting a show that they know is ending anyway.

The few times they promoted Lexx intensively on-air was probably because they couldn’t sell the ad time and so had extra 15 or 30 seconds spots open.

The hiatus was too long, Episodes 11, 12 and 13 were not good episodes to draw in casual fans. I get the feeling at times that the Beans, knowing this is their final season are pretty much doing what they want to do, are experimenting a bit, and are not particularly focussed on expanding the fan base either.

In any case, I’ve found the previous seasons much more effective seen as a whole rather than judged episode by episode–the inconsistency in individual episodes can leave you scratching your head but the over-all vision of each season is astounding. I expect the same thing to happen with Season 4–but someone who’s just discovered the show as of 4.11 is not going to have any sense of that and won’t have enough time to figure it out anyway.

Finally, the spin-off talk always seemed pretty much a pipe dream to me. The Beans never sounded particularly interested, and I don’t know why SciFi
Channel would be either–considering their lack of attention to the original series.
