The David Lynch film of Frank Herbert’s Dune is a very, very flawed movie. Lynch was, perhaps, not the best choice of a director. But with all of the studio-imposed edits on the film, it’s amazing that it makes *any* sense whatsoever. Rumors abound about a 6-hour “director’s cut,” which are pretty much bogus, but a much longer version *is* supposed to exist (which is *not* the broadcast version of the movie, which has a fair amount of poor-quality deleted scenes placed in the *wrong spots*, deletes key effects and opticals, and which render the movie even *less* comprehensible…David Lynch felt that this re-editing *so* destroyed the movie, he had his name taken off this version). But, for all of that, I thought it was a decent enough film. And, apparantly, I am not alone; Frank Herbert attended the first cast/crew screening of the completed film and lept to his feet, shouting “That’s it! That’s my book on the screen!”
