Uh…that’s not true. The original idea was that [i]Star Trek[/i]: The Original Series was set in the 2160s. But some writers sort of forgot and wrote lines implying that it was the 2300s. The exact date was never established in the run of the first show.

When it was in reruns in the 70s and fans asked when it took place, Gene Roddenbury compromised and said it was 2266-9. Still, episodes like [i]Tomorrow is Yesterday[/i] suggest the 22nd Century, while others like [i]Space Seed[/i] suggest the 24th Century.

The date was finally established onscreen in [i]Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home[/i] (“the late 23rd Century”), and specified in the [i]Star Trek: The Next Generation[/i] first season episode [i]The Neutral Zone[/i] (“2364”).
