Yes, I agree that there was a definite shift in how the character of Kai was portrayed. I personally rather liked the more emotional Kai, but then again, all the deadpan “The dead do not…” comments are pretty funny.
I know that McManus has described the character as being almost autistic, which fits with his portrayal of the detached, unemotional Kai.
