Does anyone know when the Series 3 DVDs are coming out.
I already know of course but the past can be very foggy sometimes.

Depends on where you’re calling from. UK, I have no idea. North America, you can expect the first disc to be released on 3/26, with a new DVD on the last Tuesday of every other month (all dates subject to change).

1st October 2001 at 8:27 am #49172AnonymousGuestHey that’s great news Aleck! I’ve been enjoying the S2 discs and have been looking forward to eventually getting S3 on DVD as well. From the release schedule, it looks like you guys aren’t going to miss a beat between the two seasons, so am I correct in assuming you might already be working on some of the earlier episodes? If so, and if you don’t mind my asking, how does the video quality compare to that of the S2 discs – is there any evidence of the intermittently grainy picture that was evident in some of the scenes shot on the Lexx set? It seems a lot less noticeable on S2V3 compared with the first two volumes, but not gone entirely, so I was wondering if Salter had all the kinks worked out by S3.
Most other aspects of the DVDs have been top notch, particularly the scene selection menus and choice of chapter breaks, the interviews, and the interactive trivia questions. I actually find myself intentionally missing questions on V3 just to hear that 790 line over and over .

That would be correct, sir.

Don’t mind at all, and yes. The graininess does seem to be a thing of the past (I think they got most of the kinks worked out during the second half of S2). I’ve looked at timecoded VHS dubs of every episode of S3 for chapter break purposes, and while the dubs aren’t of the best quality, they should look fine when it comes to the actual product (the dubs are hastily done with little to no quality control just to give us something to work with). A word of caution, however. S3 was shot on high-definition digital video and ran through a film-grain filter to lessen the shot-on-video look. This adds some grain to the series as a whole, but for the most part duplicates a 35-mm film look as best it can (It’s not entirely successful, as the grain is problematic during shots involving smoke or mist, but there aren’t that many shots of this nature in S3, and in some cases it still looks like it was shot on video, which means that it was wise of them to go back to film stock for S4).

Cool. Glad you like ’em. I like doing ’em, so it all balances out. Though they don’t get as much attention as some of the other aspects, the scene selection menus are just about my favorite things on the discs. The backgrounds are picked out by Andrew from Salter Street Digital, and they are generally just *gorgeous.* I’m assuming that he takes them from the digital effects reel masters or something, as just grabbing an image from the episode itself wouldn’t be that high quality. As for intentionally missing the trivia questions, let me just say that you don’t have to intentionally miss each question at least twice in one sitting. It takes me a while before I can even bear to do the trivia questions again after that. I’m still not over that particular one. If I have to hear 790 saying “Bingo-bongo dum-dum time” once more, I’ll probably trash the office.

1st October 2001 at 8:12 pm #49174AnonymousGuestHey, Aleck – great job on the just-released S2 DVD! I love the moths and the periodic appearance of the Lexx. Your trivia questions are the best! You just get better & better! Thanks for entertaining me so well
3rd October 2001 at 4:55 am #49175AnonymousGuestHey, thanX for the technical info on season 3, Aleck. I have long pondered whether or not some parts of the show were done on DV. It’s really a boost for us independent guys who aren’t afraid to stray from film.

5th October 2001 at 9:24 pm #49176AnonymousGuesthey aleck, you ever think about using any lexx bloopers. I hate to cramp your style, since you have done those amazing dvd’s. But I do tend to fantasize about McManus accidentally bursting our laughing or something like that.

I think about it every day.
Seriously, outtakes and bloopers was the *first* thing we approached Salter about. Unfortunately, they haven’t archived their outtakes, and don’t have them readily available. We’re trying to push for them once again with the Season 3 releases, in hopes that *maybe* they’ll come up with something, but personally, I’m not holding my breath. Thankfully, they are keeping the DVD market in mind when shooting Season 4, and are tacking all outtakes to the ends of the masters, so that they’ll have them on-hand and ready when we do the discs. For some reason, it’s seeming to be harder to come up with extras for the Season 3 discs than the Season 2 ones. There’s just not a lot available. We’re trying to get some stuff done while they’re still in production (ummm…well…today’s the last day at Electropolis, and I haven’t *heard* anything…but maybe they’ve done *something*…Last I heard, they are running a bit behind schedule, though, so they may have some more time in H’fax yet…). Anyway, though, the Season 3 discs should still be cool. It’s still early in the game. We’ll get something going. And Season 4 (I’m not saying anything definite about them, as we’re not in a position to make any announcements and I gotta cover my patinkin if something happens and we don’t end up doing them…which I can’t foresee happening, but life is unpredictable), well, the DVDs for S4 should kick major boo-tay.
