A few questions

I am from the UK and have just seen the episode from the second series, where the cylons board the Galatica and set about trashing the ship and its crew.
In the past the human pistols have been able to take down the cylons, why where they suddenly having no effect on them.

Also does anyone else think that the Galactica is seriously under powered in its offensive capabilites. When the Galactica is furiously churning out thousands of rounds a second plus shed loads of flak the base stars lazily churn out a few rockets and cause tons more damage.
The original battle star galactica had a couple of spinal mounted lasers to complement it’s anti star fighter weapons, it could give a good shoeing to a base star or two.
