GuestWhat a smashing idea Slop.
If I ever register my new site at Tripod I may make some “new” covers for people to print out and replace their old DVD cover inserts. The ones from the 4 movies put out by Kosch are particulary unimmaginitive.
I’m a big fan of the montage style posters that show you a bit of what the movie will be about.

GuestI would love to enter a competition for DVD covers if we started one, I actually earn my living as Graphic Designer, so I would definitely be up for it.
Shall we give it a try, and if Aleck agrees, what do we win?, how about Aleck resigns and the winner takes his job!!! (hehehe).

GuestOkay, I don’t want to be discouraging, but I honestly don’t think that this is an option. Not that I don’t think it would be a great and fun idea, because I do. However, there are all kinds of problems involved.
To begin with, there is the question of getting Salter Street’s approval. They went back and forth with us on our sleeve designs a number of times before we were able to deliver a sleeve that they liked.
There’s the question of legal issues, such as getting a contract worked up that would cover all the bases of using the artwork in advertisements, catalogs, online usage, etc.
There’s the problem that arises when it comes to any later releases — if someone submits a piece of artwork for this contest, and if we end up doing Season 4 videos, and if the artwork that is designed for those releases in any way resembles the artwork submitted, we could be sued for theft of intellectual property (which is one reason why most TV shows won’t read story ideas that you send them).
And, on top of everything else, we haven’t even announced that we’ll be doing a Season 3 release…we haven’t denied it, either, but we can’t say anything for certain at this time…
Plus, I think we have a fairly exclusive deal with the design firm that does all of our titles, and this might throw a monkey wrench into the works.Again, I’m sorry to be discouraging, and I’ll bring it up with the Powers That Be, but I thought I’d just pass along the arguments against it that I know I’ll hear in response.

GuestAleck, fair comment on your last post, I think the part of getting involved on your side probably wasn’t that serious.
Still, it would be fun to put our artistic talents to good use for a bit of fun, and come up with a design for a DVD cover, just amongst us Lexxians on the board, and maybe Sad could contribute a t-shirt or mug from the Sad’s collection of novelty gifts.

Hey Squish thats an idea! That would be really cool. The first place winner gets a coffee mug with his or her cover design on it. The second place winner could get a T-shirt and ect. Not a bad idea at all Squish.

Yeah Aleck I didn’t think about all that. But your right it would be a legal nightmare to make this whole contest work. But hey thanx for the feed back on it.

I’ll help if I can, first things first, most GD’s use Mac’s as their design systems and you need to have knowledge of them (you can blag a bit, so long as you can use one).
The programs used are quite expensive, they range from Adobe Pagemaker to Quark, although I get to use an SGI workstation with Repri software. Anyway, a working knowledge of these will prove worthwhile, but if you’re lucky you can sometimes get a junior position if you know lower end GD suites such as Corel series or the inferior Adobe products.
Most GD houses will already have a GD in place, so if your lucky enough to get an interview (it took two years for me starting out), you should take a long a cd-rom containing your work or a portfolio.
I’m sorry to sound discouraging, but I won’t kid you…it’s not easy, at least in the UK.
This is because most companies only require one person to do their advertising design work, and can’t really afford to pay for another in-house GD.
The benefits should you make it are worthwhile, you are you own boss, the people I work for wouldn’t know an SGI from a laptop, and you encounter a lot of stupidity and naiveity, which is great, because you can tell them whatever you like and they have to accept it!!!
Anyway, I’m not sure of the situation in the states, but give it a go, you’ll find it very rewarding.

GuestHey X here’s two other things you might want to consider. Try an internship somewhere, it doesn’t pay anything but the experience is worth it. Also you should put together a portfolio of all your work and show it to as many people as possible. You know now that I think I about it I should do that with all my short storys.

One good way of getting a job in GD is to sign on to a college course that will place you in a postion if you pass the course. And if you know anybody that’s in the GD business then they may be able to help you in creating a noteworthy portfolio.
