I’m trying to put a playlist together with this as a common theme. Something I can label, “In Case of Apocalypse, Play Tape.”
As a result, trying to find all the coolest Apocalyptic/post-Apocalyptic songs I can. Any help is appreciated. So far, I’ve got:
DON’T FEAR THE REAPER, by Blue Oyster Cult
AMERICAN PIE, by Don McLean
WHEN THE MAN COMES AROUND, by Johnny Cash
SILENT RUNNING, by Mike and The Mechanics
TRUE FAITH, by New Order
RED RIGHT HAND, by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT, by R.E.M.
FOREVER YOUNG, by AlphavilleGotta be some more good ones out there I’m not thinking of. Preferably not incomprehensible thrash-metal, which seems to be the only other Apocalyptic stuff I can find.
???

Then there’s post-apocalpsy stuff from Gary Newman like Down in the Park.
I’m pretty sure there’s be some good Pink Floyd songs that would fit in with that theme…. Something like Floyd’s Goodbye Blue Sky might be suitable.
You might be interested in the songs off the compilation album, Like an Atom Bomb.

I hate Dave Matthews, but “When the world ends” is a great song.
Hmm I should know more, but can’t think of much. There’s a few 311’s songs like that too.

In the beginning was the word, man said: Let there be more light
Electric scenes and laser beams, neon brights the light abhorring nights
On the second day he said: Let’s have a gas
Hydrogen and cholera and pest
Let’s make some germs, we’ll poison the worms
Man will never be suppressedAnd he said: Behold what I have done
I’ve made a better world for everyone
Nobody laugh, nobody cry
World without end, forever and ever
Amen, amen, amenOn the third we get green and blue for pie
On the fourth we send rockets to the sky
On the fifth make the beasts and submarines
On the sixth man prepares his final dream:
In our image, let’s make robots for our slaves
Imagine all the time that we can save
Computers, machines, the silicon dream
Seventh he retired from the sceneAnd he said: Behold what I have done
I’ve made a better world for everyone
Nobody laugh, nobody cry
World without end, forever and ever
Amen (amen), amen (amen), amen (amen)On the eighth day machine just got upset
A problem man had never seen as yet
No time for flight, a blinding light
And nothing but a void, forever nightHe said: Behold what man has done
There’s not a world for anyone
Nobody laughed, nobody cried
World’s at an end, everyone has died
Forever amen (amen), amen (amen), amen (amen)He said: Behold what man has done
There’s not a world for anyone
Nobody laughed, nobody cried
World’s at an end, everyone has died
Forever amen (amen), amen (amen), amen (amen)
(Amen)12th August 2004 at 1:26 am #72619petParticipantU2’s One Tree Hill always reminds me of the Apocalypse, but only if you’re into Revelation. If you don’t know the Bible verses it’s just a song about a guy dying in a motorcycle accident.
Until the End of the World is Judas singing to Jesus.
(BTW, non-Christian speaking; I just think U2 are shockingly literate for a pop band and Revelation would make a good alien invasion movie, if started on Chapter 8. I wrote one in college, but then I never did anything with it. ๐ )
And what’s that oldie that goes “In the year 2525, if man is still alive…?”

“Greenfields” by The Brothers Grimm. But far better is the ‘Faith no More’ version, waaay better. You’ll hear the ‘Lurker whistle this one half a dozen times a year.
Once there were greenfields
Kissed by the sun
Once there were valleys
Where rivers used to run
Once there were blue skies
With white clouds high above
Once they were part of
An everlasting love
We were the lovers who strolled
Through greenfieldsGreenfields are gone now
Parched by the sun
Gone from the valleys
Where rivers used to run
Gone with the cold wind
That swept in through to my heart
Gone with the lovers
Who let their dreams depart
Where are the greenfields that we
Used to goI’ll never know what made you run away
How can I keep searching when dark clouds hide the day
I only know there’s nothing here for me
Nothing in this wild world for me to seeBut
I’ll keep on waiting
‘Til you return
I’ll keep on waiting
Until the day you learn
You can’t be happy
When your heart’s on the road
You can’t be happy
Until you bring it home
Home to the greenfields and me

Something is going wrong
With the singer and the song
And the music isn’t gentle anymore
There’s a mist across the moon
And the sun’s too hot at noon
And the house is dark behind the broken door
Where the flowers used to grow
With their leaves are hanging low
And the constant shadow lies across the floor
There’s a strange and empty sky
Where the wild birds used to fly
And I never tasted bitter rain beforeAnd will the grass be gone from underneath the sky
Will the golden flower wither soon and die
Will the fire burn out the land
And the sea fill-up with sand
Will the last word ever spoken be why?
Will the last word ever spoken be why?Someone’s lost the plan
For the brotherhood of man
And no one’s trying to find it anymore
And the winds become a sigh
For those who hate and those who die
And the waves are black and slow along the shoreAnd will the grass be gone from underneath the sky
Will the golden flower wither soon and die
Will the fire burn out the land
And the sea fill-up with sand
Will the last word ever spoken be why?
Will the last word ever spoken be why, why, why?
Will the last word ever spoken be.WHY?14th August 2004 at 7:26 pm #72633BarabbasParticipant“Wargoul” and a good chunk of their music – GWAR
“Thunderstruck” – AC/DC
“I wanna be Sedated” – RamonesWhen I think Apcopy-clipse I think of Gettin the Hell outta somewhere and taking lives to achieve that goal. So the music has to fit a little nothin’ with harmony and a slow tempo.
14th August 2004 at 9:38 pm #72635YOWAYYOParticipantMetallica’s “Fade to black” has a post-apocolypse feel to it, I always thought, and is just a great song.
On the lighter side, Europe’s “The final countdown” is definately apocolyptic. Anyone remember that tune? It’s pretty corny…humanity heading to Venus (not sure why) and the line about being light-years away. I can’t help but feel nostalgic whenever I hear it, though.

Komm Susser Todd (Arianne)
from the End of Evangelion.16th August 2004 at 7:05 pm #72662AnonymousGuestI’m definately agree with Logan, “The End” by The Doors is the definitive apocalypse song.
Also try “Apocalypse Please” by Muse.
16th August 2004 at 8:01 pm #72664CesareParticipantThis song can be a depressive “breaking up” lovesong as well, but anytime I hear it, apocalyptic visions come to my mind. Maybe it’s just me…:-)
Deine Lakaien – Lost
We did…used to…laugh and
We did…used to…breathe and
And now all is stuck in tears
Your eyes they are burning
Lips remain in taciturnity
No more returningWhat we did had to be done
All our faith lost and gone
What we did we never won
Lost our hope our aim
All is gone
To close the door is never easy
But we can’t ignore
We can’t ignore
What we lost we won’t find
See those eyes
They turned blindAll those…nights warm…as fire
Take them…with me…cold desire
Where teh naked fairies played
The soil…it is…burning
Leaving…gloomy…emptiness
Nothing to sayWhat we did had to be done
All our faith lost and gone
What we did we never won
Lost our hope our aim
All is gone
To close the door is never easy
But we can’t ignore
We can’t ignore
What we lost we won’t find
See those eyes
