…And I contend that Basket Case is a good good movie, but that’s just me. It’s a low-budget movie, to be sure, and the acting is overall sub-par, but you can’t get DeNiro for five bucks. I just have a soft spot in my heart (or on my head) for the whole evil-deformed-mutant-killer-detatched-Siamese-Twin-in-a-basket subgenre, I guess.
quote
and did i mention andy warhol’s entire ouvre especially frankenstein and dracula! when i reccognized udo kier in my own private idaho and a madonna video i had to laugh…
Udo has done some REALLY outre work. LOTS of really bizarre things in his filmography. I don’t know why the Beans have never used him in LEXX. I mean, he’s PERFECT! (See, I can be on-topic every once and a while…) He’s German, he’s wacky, he’s a cult icon, and he’ll be in practically *anything*!!!
quote
…anyway, maybe we should plan a john waters pilgrimmage to b’more, and pay homage to the great divine!
Well, we could if you’d say when you were in town!

Oh, it’s a lot. He’s a cantankerous old salt, to be sure.

i’m ashamed to say i haven’t read deathbird or a boy and his dog…i’m a relative newcomer to the works of ellison and my local bookstore isn’t too helpful…so far all i’ve been able to pick up are edgeworks vol. one and a copy of the original teleplay for “city on the edge of forever”…i want to read more of his stuff!!

…And well you should! He’s done some amazing stuff. “I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream” is perhaps one of the greatest sci-fi works, nay, one of the greatest pieces of fiction I have ever read. And I could say that for a number of his works. Just look for any decent anthology (I’ve got “The Essential Ellison” and it’s pretty definitive, though there are a few things I wish were in there, but ain’t that always the way?) and pick it up. Then read it. A number of times.

GuestHarlan Ellison is amazing. Just a piece of trivia regarding “A Boy and His Dog”. The movie version was Don Johnson’s first starring role he was 18 or 19 I believe.

all right it’s a date! re harlan ellison, a lot of the stuff is out of print so check used bookshops, forbidden planet (ny sister to english store) used to have exhaustive collection, might try them on line…i am still cursing whoever stole my second copy of deathbird stories, as it is hard to find…yes, a boy and his dog was long-dong johnson’s first appearance and is quite excellent despite that, and i believe the story came after “disaster #4” in harlan’s words…he can be quite peevish but that’s ok, can’t we all, i think he also successfully sued the makers of the terminator for plagiarism of one of his stories but i still love him….re udo kier, his price might have gone up since the madonna video but it’s a great idea and maybe we should petition the beans!

Excerpt from “Exquisite Corpse” by Poppy Brite
“Late in the year,New Orleans still has its hot days. In the slave quaters, Jay and Tran blossomed like the giant stinking carrion-flowers that grow in humid jungles. Their ravaged abdomens swelled and burst like red-petals, a jubliee of rot. Their putrescent fluids pooled on the concrete floor and in the hollows of their disintegrating bodies. …Their faces, c**** and B**** grew into shapeless masses of blackened flesh. Swollen tongues like ball gags forced their jaws wide. Organs tumbled out of their bodies like distended winebags. From their decomposition rose wisps of steam and soft wet sounds of gaseous intimacy….Tran fell out of his binding straps and melted slowly into Jay’s ribcage. A large, faintly iridescent stain ate up the concrete floor around them. Their eyes were black caverns. They gave birth to worms, generation after generation, until their bodies were covered as if in a living blanket. Soon they were picked clean, their bones an ivory sculpture-puzzle shining in the dark, waiting to tell their mute love story.

My computer went haywire and tried to post my reply while I was still logging in…
Harlan Ellison wrote “A Boy and his Dog,” which was later made into a movie starring Don Johnson of Miami Vice, Nash Bridges and “Heartbeat” fame. It was written after his 4th divorce (“Disaster #4”). He can be a mean ol’ man. He sued the makers of Terminator because the film ripped off his Outer Limits episode, “Demon With a Glass Hand.”
Udo Kier is a really wacky German actor who has been in his share of really strange films, and I think 2 Madonna videos. I said that the Beans should have cast him in LEXX, and FX replied in the affirmative.
That’s all. It’s all in reply to a lot of messages that were made above.
