I’d say like in The hunt for Red October; they die in sight of it, may be in the Earth’s atmosphere or nearby.
And as the space rubble floats down, there is a representaion of each character. For example, Roslin’s glasses are found by a couple near the Seine, or a child finds Adama’s lighter in the desert of Sudan; which sparks a series of snapshots of the character for through the seasons. The each person finding a piece of the rubble, looks up at the sky in wonder and pockets the piece or tosses it aside.
And life goes on…..
