ParticipantHey guys,
Picked up a nice thick 700 page book for the equivalent of about 95 US cents which is really interesting.
It’s called Far Horizons and is edited by Robert Silverberg
It’s kinda cool in that it includes new works by the following:
-Ursula K Le Guin
-Joe Haldeman
-Orson Scott Card
-David Brin
-Robert Silverberg
-Dan Simmons
-Nancy Kress
-Fredrick Pohl
-Gregory Benford
-Anne McCaffrey
-Greg BearBut the interesting thing is they all do a story set in their famous space opera series but a story that was never told in any of their books. I dont know many of the authors but I’ll list the series the new stories are from
-Ursula K Le Guin – The Ekumen
-Joe Haldeman – The Forever War
-Orson Scott Card – The Ender Series
-David Brin – The Uplift Universe
-Robert Silverberg – Roma Eterna
-Dan Simmons – The Hyperion Cantos
-Nancy Kress – The Sleepless
-Fredrick Pohl – Tales Of The Heechee
-Gregory Benford – The Galactic Centre Series
-Anne McCaffrey – The Ship Who Sang
-Greg Bear – The WayI’ll let you know how they pan out. Interesting so far though.

Guest i recognize 4 of my favorites, Le Guin, McCaffery, Pohl and Bear. in fact i looked up Greg Bears official site and it was an interesting read. apparently in 2000 he wrote a Star Wars book called “Rogue Planet”. i really need to pick up a book every now and then! the link to his site is

i recently saw “the Lathe of Heaven” on PBS and Le Guin even gave an interview after the movie. Fascinating !!!! i was very disappointed that the movie they where talking about making, “The Dragonriders of Pern” didn’t get made. but the people who were interested in making the movie were going to change too much from the original book, so Le Guin backed out. good for her!
now it was a while ago that i read this on the sci-fi wire so i may have some details wrong, like it was going to be a miniseries instead of a movie for example. i am sure somebody here on the BB know more of the details than i do. ParticipantActually it was a good buy, picked up 5 sci fi books for about $5 US
A good buy in anyones language.I want the gap series of books made into a CGI movie like that final fantasy one. Then I would be truly happy.

GuestJust figured Id add my 3 favorite recommendations (I know thats not the point, but oh well) 😛
Dante Alighieri “Inferno” if you’ve read that read the other 2, “Purgatorio” ;”Paradiso”
Plato “The Cave (Analogy)” possibly the greatest story ever told
Author Unknown “Gilgamesh the King” “Gilgamesh” “Gilgamesh and Enkidu” same story, different names. Oldest story known to man, and yes Gilgamesh was a recorded King, possibly the 4th known King on Earth making it all that much more interesting. Some even claim (Joyce) this story was written before man evolved into modern intelligence/sentience. A must read.
