Dave Lister and Hilly (Craig Charles and Hattie Hayridge from the BBC’s highest ever rated TV show Red Dwarf) talk about their experiences of working on the season 4 LEXX episode ‘P3X’.

    Craig Charles on Halifax

…. “And now here I am, standing on the corner of Barrington and Brunswick waiting for my ride. I get picked up on this corner every day by a four wheel drive pick-up truck that looks like a snow plough has been attached to the front. The huge shovel clears the snow out of the way as we make the slow tedious journey to the studio were I’m filming an episode of LEXX, the Canadian science fiction series which goes out on Sky 1 over here.

Today my ride is late, very late and I’m wondering if it’s ever going to come at all because last night they had the heaviest recorded snowfall since records began. I can’t ring up and find out if the roads are completely impassable because all the lines are down, I’ve tried to use the fax in my room and that was unsuccessful. Jackie my beloved darling wife packed my bag for this trip and forgot to pack my coat. My nose is red, my lips are so chapped I have to use special make up on set, I can’t feel my fingers, I can’t feel my toes and for the first time in my life I’m wishing the blood running through my veins was a touch less West Indian.

On a cold day when you breathe out you produce a cloud of white condensation because your breath is warm and moist. I wonder about what happens when you fart, because waiting on this corner I let a sly one go and worry if the girl across the street can see a dense white cloud blasting out of the backof my slacks……

…. I’m about to play the English warden of a Texas jail in the weirdest SF show of all time. It’s filmed in the coldest place I’ve ever been to, containing scenes where I’m supposed to be in Arizona, which we have to film in the studio in front of a green screen so they can paint the desert in afterwards because going to Arizona would probably be too expensive and ignoring the fact that I’d defiantly enjoy the Arizonan weather a million times more.” …..

Hattie Hayridge and Craig Charles talk about their LEXX Experience

Speaking to http://www.reddwarf.co.uk, Hattie, who plays a character called Heidi, a Texan prison warden, with Craig Charles as her husband in the episode P3X said,It was good because I’d never acted with him that way before I was always in my separate bit.

Craig Charles, “I think Hattie was offered the part originally, and once she’d said yes to it, they thought they’d make it sort of a Red Dwarf-y tie-in. Hattie plays this Texan – a cross between Jerry Hall and Daphne from A Streetcar Named Desire – and I play this English governor in a Texan jail. I’m the warden, she’s my sub-warden and my wife. We’ve got this daughter who is completely insane…

Craig Charles,”Lexx is like S&M meets science fiction It’s a very sexy show – I felt like a dirty old man half the time. During the filming, sometimes I just thought, ‘I hope my wife doesn’t see this’.

Hattie Hayridge, “They said it was the most risqué one they’d done – half-naked men holed up in dungeons. Naked women in the showers in the women’s prison…

Hattie Hayridge, “The costume woman said, ‘Oh, you’re much thinner than I thought you’d be. Maybe we’ll change it when you get over here…‘ She was imagining a great big, fat Texan! I was meant to be wearing trousers and a shirt – it was a little bit Cell Block H-y. But when we got there, me and the make-up women and the costume women got together, all girly, and made her a bit more Dolly Parton! It’s still prison uniform, but I wear a shirt that’s two sizes too small and a really short skirt. They curled my hair up – just a few curls, my own hair.

Craig Charles, “Hattie is horrible in it! She’s horrible – the wife from hell. She’s really mean – the wife from hell! She constantly insults me.

Hattie Hayridge, “It’s a marriage not made in heaven. We were thinking, ‘Where would we have met?‘ Because I’d obviously never been out of Texas. He must have been passing through when we met, and married.

Craig Charles, “Halifax, Nova Scotia – the coldest place I’ve ever been, It was like minus 20 over there! They had the worst recorded level of snowfall since records began while we were over there. It was great – like a big winter wonderland.

Craig Charles, “All the cast are really nice. Michael McManus is a nice fella. Didn’t really socialise with the girl who plays Zev. She’s got remarkable lips. They can’t be real! Apparently one of the cameramen was saying that sometimes they cast shadows!

Boy, I can hardly wait for the video on this episode. Obviously, Sci Fi will have fuzzy blobs and creative camera shots. Heaven forbid we Americans should be subjected to something as dangerous and evil as wet boobs in a shower. Doubtless, a nice chain saw massacre is far more acceptable than a naked male or female. This one sounds like the ep with Lomea the Dominatrix in it. I wonder if it was the one that was previewed. I sure would have loved to see that as well.

Thanks for posting this! But why (she whined)couldn’t they have shot the Arizona scenes on location?! Surely we’re cheaper than Namibia–er, well, maybe not…

BTW, Mercury, no offense but the correct lyric is: “the time has come for bitter things”.

    Hi ya, SG,

    good interviews.

Just one slight correction (I’m anal that way); according to the pink version of the script, which I have in front of me right now, the title of the episode is “P4X”, and it is episode 4.03.

And yes, nwmonikr… Lomea will be back in this episode.

Don’t know what preview episode you are referring to; are you speaking of the Lexx party at Electropolis last week Friday? If so, according to a Salter Street employee who was there, they previewed episode 4.01 – but then, I wasn’t there, so I can’t tell you for sure.

    Hi Pat,
Thanks for the info. Yes, that was what I was curious about regarding the screened ep mentioned by Terri from the UnCon Yahoo mail group. I wonder what the possibility of having a screening for an ep or two at UnCon would be? It would be an economical entertainment interlude and the fans would certainly provide Salter with instant gratification!
Gosh, that would sure be neat!

    Hi again, nwmonikr,

I think that’s a good idea… Why not suggest it to one of the UnCon organizers?

Pat – who can’t afford UnCon, but you probably wouldn’t want a boring teetotal, non-whale watcher along, anyways

    Hya Pat,
nice to hear from you again. Awww sorry you can’t make uncon, It would have been nice to have met you.
I’m sure no one would give a monkeys about you been teetotal. I’m teetotal, I think some other are too, either by choice or ‘cos the old bods won’t take the strain anymore
As for the boat trip, a think a lot of people don’t care whether they see a whale, it’ll just be nice to go for the ride and the company. Either that or it’s some kind of weird macho initiation ceremony. ie who can do the Saturday night party, have one hours sleep, get up, go on the choppy water and NOT puke. Hahaha the boat owners are not going to know what hit them. Do ya think somebody should warn them

Well I never. I’ve owned a copy of “Antichrist superstar” since 1997 and never realised. The print in the CD inlay is remarkably small.
Ditching the quote for one from “The reflecting God”, but I may change it to the chorus of “Coma black”….

Erm…. I’m afraid I just found the information by scouting around the internet, I can’t corroborate any of it and I certainly didn’t interview them myself (wow! that would have been great! )

I’m afraid I’m not in regular contact with Salter Street so much of the info I post to the LEXX News is wizzed from other sites.

Thanks for the update Pat – Sorry if it misslead anyone.

    Hi y’all,

no probs, Sad! I enjoyed the article, so thanks for posting it! Just always good to have those little details straight (like Brigadoom/ Brigadoon), I’m just very German that way.

KOG, getting out of bed early? I’m afraid that’s something else that’s “not my kind of thing”, lol!I’m a nocturnal creature. Partying all night is no problem, but then I want to sleep through the day!

PAT! Hey, not enthusiastic or anything, just nonchalantly sayin’ ‘hi’ that’s all. “Hi.”

Okay, please tell me Craig Charles will be at UnCon ‘cuz this article had be whizzin’! I hope he makes it there, too. I figure a showing of Brian, Lex, Jeff, and Charles would put us way over the top comedy wise. I could laugh until I pass out and then go home a happy camper. Her lips cast a shadow? Ya know, sometimes they actually ARE real! Oh ye of little faith. (I believe in your lips Xenia! ) Gee, I know so many people in Tucson, Arizona, I might’ve been able to get them hooked up on the res! (yeh, I’m sure THAT would have gone over well), but it seems like it would’ve been cheaper than Nambia??? Nah, they’re not stupid, Donovan knows we would’ve flocked over there like lemmings to the sea just to get a glimpse of our favs filming Lexx.

Lets hope season 4 maintians the artistry of season 3 as well as the humorous and brisk pace of seasons 1 and 2. That would be a treat worth worldwide acclaim…and perhaps some cutting edge music from such groups as Rammstein.

I absolutely agree! Season 3 was wonderful for it’s artistic imigery (aww, sorry, I’m drunk ), I can’t help but worry that the scenes on Earth will be lacking the wonderful scenery of season 3.

Hi Pat, I’m sorry You can’t make UnCon. Your write-ups were what inspired me to go for it. As a late comer (I’m here in the States)I was sore afraid they wouldn’t have one this year. As to teetotal, at one time I could have put most everyone under the table and still been sober. That was a loong time ago and now if I have more than a couple of beers or whiskey sours, I’m in a world of hurt. Time can make wusses of the strongest!
As to the scenery for season 4, there is some truly magnificent country over here in the colonies, much of it similar to Namibia. I have had the good luck to travel all over America and have been blessed with seeing some truly fantastic places. Wyoming, Montana, California (away from LA) Louisiana, Florida and the Everglades not to mention Arizona and New Mexico, hey even here in the midwest, we have some beautiful vistas. I hope they will do some interesting location shoots–as long as it isn’t during UnCon!!
