This is the first sketch I’ve done in about 10 years. I think it’s a good likeness, but something needs tweaking. I justcan’t put my finger on what, though. Some constructive criticism would be appreciated.

21st May 2003 at 5:45 am #66234theFreyParticipantHummm, the left cheek area is a bit rounded, and the right eyebrow needs shortened and the angle tweaked. Nice ‘do though. 😀

Streudel, I think it’s very good, definitely drool worthy ;), but the angles don’t look quite natural (but then what’s natural about a re-animated, decarbonised body?) I’d make his ear and nose bigger and push his facial features over to our left a bit — (i.e see a little less of HIS right side of his face). Or have his whole body facing forward a little more. But those are minor concerns, what I really like about it is that you’ve really captured his expression — you’ve given the dead guy life. And you’ve done a great job with the shading. Actually, bun aside, he reminds me a little more of MM from Speaking Parts than Kai; maybe he’s a little too alive. On the other hand, I don’t like it when people just match up pics of people to the last detail, that often leads to the apparent absence of the artists personal creativity, vision, and interpretation. And the more I look at it the more I appreciate it; there’s a certain sadness in his eyes, maybe because he is the LAST of the Brunnen-G.

It’s pretty fantastic. Lots of details to the lips and eyes, and heavy shading underneath the eyes. Good stuff 😀

Yes, the angles drove me bonkers. I used one of the pictures in the Sad downloads for a model, because he looks so, I don’t know, warrior-like in it. I believe it’s from the end of Supernova.
This was my first real attempt at a subject turned at an angle, head on is much easier ( no ears to deal with 🙂 ) I think Frey is right about the eyebrow and cheek thing, they make his eyes look a little more close set than they really are.
The nose was hell to do. I feel it’s one of his most striking features, so I’d like to keep tweaking on that and get it just so. I think I’ll work on the ear a bit, too. I need the practice on ears and hands.
Everyone’s suggestions were real helpful. After you’ve looked at a piece you’ve been working for an extended period of time, you start to lose perspective, so it helps tremendously to have outside input.
I thought he looks rather sad to me, too. Kai would say the Dead do not feel, but I’ve always thought he looked somewhat angsty in Supernova. Maybe it’s also some of my view of Kai projected in there, he’s such a tragic figure to me. I consider a high compliment that everyone feels I brought some of my own interpretation to it.
Well, thanks again, and I’ll probably be back with some Z/Xev or Stan drawings. The actors in Lexx are so unique looking, not cookie cutter Hollywood types. They make fascinating subjects.

It’s his Roman nose, it has a real gladiator feel to it.

Well, his nose AND his brace. But tell me about it, I sure wouldn’t want to get in striking distance of his nose. Crikey! 😯 😉

Kai clearly did show emotion in the LEXX movies, but frankly, I always felt that his “The dead do not” talk was pretence and an excuse … His constant repetition to me showed that he really felt rather sorry for himself being dead. He’d say “The dead do not feel” to hide his emotional vulnerability (partially due to his impotence I believe). I wrote a little essay before @ LEXX.com on this; probably been lost to the ether.
Anyway, great sketch, and I look forward to seeing more of your artwork. 🙂

I always thought the Dead Do Nots were a cop out, too. He shows a certain level of emotion all throughout the series. In Nook, he looks pleased with himself, he looks pissed repeatedly. He even rolls his eyes when he talks about Stanley going to Fire.
I do think the impotence would have something to do wth his desire to repress his human tendencies. I also think a desire to repress the pain of having his homeworld destroyed and the guilt of 2000 years of killing would be a motivating factor for his stoicism.
Fascinating insights, Logan. I would’ve liked to read that essay.

Could you give me a new link or send it or something like that? I’d love to see it.As for Kai & emotions – he certainly has shown some level of emotion here and there. He looks quite sad and shocked when Zev is turning into raw proteins and the “but it’s been a while since I slaughtered a whole room full of petty byrocrats” quote says it all…;-)
But I think that all these lapses are more like recalling emotions than really having emotions. Kai’s “motivations” are mostly intellectual and racional I guess.
But most probably, he’s just dog tired of going on and on and too “lazy” to truly feel something. And also, being around for 2000 years plus having memories of many people, he’s killed, may be the cause of his lack of emotion. Maybe at a certain point his brain just blocked. Imagine it. With all that knowledge, painful memories and after all those years… You would have to get either emotionless or completely mad. Maybe the bio-scholars manipulated the assasins’ brains to prevent any feelings.
(I guess that if Kai became alive and survived long enough, he would return to his “the dead do not” ways very soon, though he would have to replace “dead” with “I”.)1st June 2004 at 1:52 am #71045streudelParticipantI hope this isn’t too large of an inline image.

I still think the angles need work. He looks a little less cockeyed than in the last version, but something about the eyes is a little off. I don’t have any formal art training, so I wind up learning through trial and error. Any suggestions would be appreciated. 😀
Oh, and here’s a link for the original sketch.

You’ll also find our very own Pet there, who, by the way, has done some fantastic paintings of Bunny and Giggerota. You might want to explore Lubka’s site. I’ve been meaning to use one of those translation programs so I can have the full experience.

When I have a problem, I start playing around with it in my art program. I use Micrographx WindowsDraw4 mostly…. not as powerful as Photoshop, but quicker for down and dirty stuff.
I took the pic, pasted two copies and then cropped only the ear out of one. I then used a twin tool to make the hair cover the ear (which was too too hight I think) on the original and then erased the cheek area from the cropped ear and started to play around with it. I ended up moving it down, in and rotating it by 4 degrees.
Were I the artist, I would save this to a png or jpg and then use the paint program to blend the edges once I was happy with it. Can the ear go down a smige more? Perhaps rotate another degree or two? Possibly, but that is up to the artist. You can also use this kind of cut and past cropping to decide if eyes are where you want them, nose is place right…. ect…What do you think?
P.s. I forgot to fix this before I uploaded it. Cover one side of the drawing and then the other. See. The left eye is looking to the right, while the right eye is looking directly at the viewer. Easy fix. Add a bit more dark to the left side of the left pupil until both eyes are looking at the viewer.
2nd June 2004 at 12:30 am #71079streudelParticipantThanks muchly, Frey! 😀 Being the technological ignoramus that I am, I never thought of using the computer to help me get the angles right. I think the ear could come down a smidge and the aspect could change a bit. Thanks again for the fresh perspective. 😀 I’m going to keep at it until I get it right.

13th August 2009 at 8:12 pm #77884freddy_simpsonGuestBeing impotent in his life might be associated to his humanity. After all, if a man can’t start up a family he feels incomplete. Not being able to function normally might made him suppress his feelings because he wouldn’t have been able to fall in love and have a normal relationship. Read what people that buy Viagra have to say about their lives, about their problems as social beings.
