I’ve been struggling with the idea of setting up Sci Fi and Series Quizzes but the level of questions needed has always been too hard to guage.

So, I thought I’d try one of the questions from the ‘killer quiz’ on you sci fi guru’s and see how it faired.

I remember a comment (I think it was Dalek who mentioned it) about the series ‘Leave it to Beaver’ (which I’ve never seen) and also a few posts concerning Buffy and Angel. See if you can get the answer to this question:

What is the connection between the series ‘Benson’, the series ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and the series ‘Leave it to Beaver’?

I’ll post the answer in the next few days (or a couple of hints), but I honestly think that some of you guys will know it pretty quick!

    Prove me right!

ok off the top of my head here is a couple of ideas but i haven’t yet figured how they fit into all three shows. the first thing i came up with is that Tony Dow who was in Leave it to Beaver possibly directed some eps of Buffy and guest starred on Benson. or it is something to do with Rene Abujonis (Odo DS9) was in Benson, and Armin Shimmermin was in Buffy, and maybe one of them had a guest spot on Leave it to Beaver. ack! please give me one more day to figure this out hehe! You’ve got me. I figured Tony Dow directed those things you mentioned, but I checked his credits and neither was on there. I love Leave it to Beaver, but I don’t know anything about those other shows. To my knowledge neither Rene Auberjanois nor Armin Shimmerman was a guest star on Beaver, but I’m not sure. I’ll do some more probing.

I guess I’d better put you guys out of yer misery. It wasn’t so much the actor or director credits, the answer is to do with the writing credits.

Joss Whedon is a writer of Buffy (in fact a writer, director and producer)

Joss’s father Tom Whedon was a writer/producer of the series Benson

Joss’s Grandmother (don’t know her name) was a writer of Leave it to Beaver.

    A real writing family huh?

(Source, Resume of Joss Whedon on the Angel Series 1 DVD box set).

damn! hubby just told me that he was sure that Benson took place in a town called Sunnydale as does Buffy, so i was hoping that Leave it to Beaver took place in a town called Sunnydale too! but your answer is cool! man i really thought we had it! hehehe i think this would be a fun forum. SadGeezer-I didn’t know Joss Whedon wrote for Buffy. I just knew him as the writer of Alien: Resurrection. And of course I didn’t know about the grandmother connection.

Mary Beth-Leave it to Beaver takes place in the town of Mayfield in an indeterminate state (though some fans claim it was Ohio based on sketchy evidence given in certain episodes).

That isn’t trivia. That’s an obscure fact that only someone who is totally obsessed with Buffy could possibly know. Someone who regularly watches the show would never, ever, figure that out.

flamegrape i have to agree. it could be found after hours of research on the net. but i don’t have that that much time hehehe! so how about some questions from the ‘not so homicidal’ section of the site where you got this question. hehe i do still think a quiz section would be alot of fun on this site! maybe you could have different levels of difficulty in the forum? even though that was a difficult question for us, a diehard Buffy fan might have gotten that because they had read it on one of their Buffy sites that they visit. whereas on this BB i am sure that those “killer” questions would be answered if they were about the different forums that we have here. as an experiment i am going to post this question (if it is alright with you Sadgeezer) tomorrow or the next day on www.bronzeshelter.com/ and see if anyone can come up with the answer. let me know if it is allright to post this question? Yer observations are totally cool as always FlameG. But I’d have to disagree

The big trouble with trivia questions on the net nowadays is the bloody Internet. To find out the answer to a ‘what is the connection between.’ question means to type the three phrases into a search engine.

It prohibits those of us that would like questions because we can remember the answers and relegates all serious net quiz questions to something that requires research. It’s a shame, but that was the only way I could put up a question that would seriously keep some of you sci fi experts thinking.

In the end, my reason for justifying the question was something that Dalek pointed out. Joss Whedon has a huge number of writing credits and I assumed that most people would pick that up. It’s then only a matter of working out the time differences between the shows and hopefully, guessing that the answer would be something to do with family.

Yes, I know (in all honesty I wouldn’t have stood a chance with such a question – but then, I have a brain like a sieve ), but I’ve seen much more subtle references to sci fi trivia on this board.

I didn’t know Joss Whedon wrote Buffy. I just knew about Alien: Resurrection. I looked him up on the Internet Movie Database, and that said his grandfather wrote for Leave it to Beaver and The Donna Reed Show. That could refer to John Whedon (he wrote for The Andy Griffith Show and The Dick Van Dyke Show, but I’m uncertain of a Beaver connection). That’s all I know.
