SadGeezer
KeymasterI bet that raised a few eyebrows?
But, speaking Frankly (erm… as SadGeezer), this is one of the greatest sci fi films I’ve ever seen! And most of us haven’t heard of it! Unfortunately (or fortunately) I had to marry a Russian to be able to see it (not available in English or subtitles!). It’s a low budget Russian film from 1986.
It’s a Sci Fi comedy. It goes something like this:
Once upon a time two friends met a barefoot alien in the street, they gave him one sock. Unfortunately they use this persons transport gizmo and instantly travel to a planet in another galaxy, Kin-Dza-Dza. The inhabitants of this planet look like people but they don`t have qualities like kindness, love, honesty and so on - but they do have a mild form of telepathy!. They use only two words to communicate, one is a bad word and the other one means everything else.
The two friends have to get a new engine, fix the transport and get home using only a box of matches (which is priceless treasure on this planet) and their poor musical talents.
Satyrical comedy that shows our society in grotesque-ish way. (in a similar way that LEXX did)
I’ve often joked with Newkate about getting this film fansubed and releasing it at no profit to sci fi sadgeezers and lady-sadgeezers to that you guys can judge for yourself.
Hopefully, I can persuade Newkatie to do it, I’ll keep you posted.

GuestI have to admit I’ve never once heard a peep of this, I work with several Russians who love cult Sci-Fi. They’ve been holding out!!
It never ceases to amaze me wherever you go in the world you find unique forms of Sci-Fi, humans have an innate need to dream of the fantastic no matter where they live.

GuestWifey tells me that there are only about three other cult Sci Fi films that they would have been into (maybe she’s forgetting – being prompted) – Stalker (arty) Solaris (classic) and the third one about a bald alien chic (?!)
The best thing you can do to find if they have been holding out on you is to go up to one of them and make the following gesture:
Place your feet about 8″ apart and angle them outwards (at say about 45 degrees). Next, bend your knees slightly and then place your arms slightly raised (as if to say ‘who me?’). Finally and most importantly, say, “Koo”. (stricktly speaking you should also have a small bell dangling from your nose, but thats just TOO weird!).

This is the main form of communication in the galaxy of Kin Dza Dza and it’ll will crack you up! 🙂
If they have seen the film they will slap you on the back as a real comrade and appologise profusely for having not told you of it. When I was in Siberia last year, I’d joke about not speaking the lingo and just say ‘Koo’ – everyone knew what I meant.
Important – DO NOT SAY KYOO – in the Galaxy of Kin Dza Dza – this is an insult.

GuestCan’t hold back any longer. Here is the mid file of the Kin Dza Dza theme tune.
I guess it’s not as enthralling as the LEXX theme or as exciting as the Babylon 5 theme. But it has a certain ‘staying’ quality 🙂

GuestWot? NewKate’s Russian? That’s a bit of a coincidence, considering I got my handle from a flawed Russian translation of the saying “Out of sight, out of mind”. 😀
But anyway, if she is, Dros Vedanya!

InactiveThanks for the sound file and the info on the film — I’ll be sure to check it out if I can find it. Speaking Of Tarkovsky’s Solaris and Stalker, both of which I love, Stalker is one of the very few sci-fi DVDs I own — many people will find it excruciatingly slow, but I love it (perhaps because I’m a little slow myself ;)).
It’s the greatest feeling in the world when you come across something obscure and wonderful. It’s like an epiphany, and it’s something that I like to keep to myself for a while (until I can hold it in no longer — usually about ten minutes :P), ’cause it feels great to be one of the rare people in the know — kinda sets you apart from the rest. Thanks for sharing, and I look forward to seeing it!
BTW, KYOO! lol, I heard it was less insulting in the Galaxy of Kin Dza Dza if you say it in green. 😛

It’s on TV tonight – I’ll check it out. I’ve not actually seen it myself but it’s well recongnised by sci fi geeks as being a classic. Although I don’t rate Clooney (bit of a looney) I’m looking forward to the remake soon.

Spoken like a true sadgeezer! 🙂 My feelings exactly. I rely more and more on feedback from the venerable visitors to this site and am always looking for new cool sci fi to watch – TV is soooo crappy lately.
I’m almost committed to making a CD of the film and shipping it out to sadgeezers who are members (at cost only – say $10). But most likely I’ll cut the film up into managable sections, subtitle it and encode it in something like DivX5.03 and release it on this site with an into or simplified SG Guide. you may think it’s a lot of trouble, but it’s that good!

Haha, as a guess that is very cool. It actually depends on what colour trousers you are wearing. Yellow means that you can say almost anything and purple means that you CAN say anything – provided you are native to the planet Pluk of course…. erm… Oki. I promise to start subtitling when I find out how to do it!
Does anyone know how to subtitle a film byu the way (I’ve seen all the websites but they tend to conflict with each other)

Hey! Who you callin’ a geek?! 😉

Hmm, “spoken like a true sadgeezer,” thanks Sad, so there’s hope for me yet! 😀 I only watch maybe three-four hours a week of TV now because it’s so, IMHO, boring and repetitious, and unfortunately there are no decent video stores (i.e. little choice) nearby so I don’t watch a lot period. Part of the reason why I come here is so that I can enjoy great sci-fi programs vicariously — by reading others thoughts on the programs I can sort of virtually enjoy the viewing experience through their eyes — and the excitement is infectious (I caught the LEXX bug partially by word-of-web). Of course it’s even better when I can hear about it, and then watch it for real! Whichever way you cut it, the geezers are a great resource!

Sounds good either way, though the ‘no shipping’ way sounds particularly cool ;). Thanks!

LOL! And with a red badge of courage* you can work up the Pluk to say everything!
Speaking of subtitling, which I only learned to do on film, I’ve often thought how fun it would be to take a foreign language flick and subtitle it with my very own words. I probably won’t be able to help much, but I’ll look into subtitling (what’s your OS etc.?)
(BTW, sorry, I didn’t do a good job with the quotes — got a bit complicated — had to edit a few times)
*Note: The Red Badge of Courage (1895) is a novel by Stephen Crane

The more I check out the technology for subbing the harder it seems!? ANy help (in terms of ‘how to’) would be hugely appreciated.
I use a standard 1gb PC running win 98. The software I have spotted for subbing includes VirtualDub, TMPGenc and SubStationAlpha. The problem I have with it though, is the timing bar. It seems that I have to use a stopwatch and program the times into the sub text first! Ideally I’d like a system which would let me cut a ten minute section of video and then let be edit the video with a subtitle stream which could be overlayed using VirtualDub or GraphEdit.
I guess I’ll get there in the end, but I would like, if possible, not to have to waste time with lots of trial and error.
Having said that, as I get through my problem with my RSI neck pain, I’m looking forward to playing around with this. If I can find a way of doing it easily, then hopefully other cool sci fi sadgeezers would feel interested in doing similar and open up the wonderful world of cool sci fi for the rest of us disgruntled sci fi sadgeezers around the world. There is a lotof good stuff out there, it’s just hard to find and this site should be a place where peeps like us can spot and announce such programmes and films.
BTW. I watched Stalker right through to the end. It was pretty hard to do 😉 I can’t say it’s any way near my fave sci fi film – the twist at the ends was the only sci fi bit that I could spot! Really eary though, and the photography was amazing! NewKate tells me that the book was a lot different!

InactiveKyoo equals Kyool! ANd it is very kool! 😀
I’ve seen it and it is totally excellent! I cannnot stress this enough, this is the ULTIMATE cult film! I started watching it late last night, and tonight I’ll be watching with my wife, I know she’ll like it too. I’ll be interested to get her opinion and then work it into a mini-review.
Many, many thanks Sad. This one has really opened up my eyes!

GuestCOOL! 🙂
I’m really glad you liked it! 🙂
I’m working on a DVD version at the moment (fix the poor quality and the timing errors and a couple of the typos and spelling mistakes (weeeeell, it was our first fansub 🙂 ))
Tickled pink you liked it 🙂 I’ve had very little feedback from peeps on what they though, I was beginning to wonder if it was just me and that my tastes in Sci Fi were just TOO perculiar 😀

InactiveNo, my wife loved it as well. What a great bunch of characters; very funny, and more. BTW, for a long time I’ve collected matchbooks on my travels (show various places I’ve been), and I have a lot of them, a fire hazard I know, but they might just come in handy some day. 🙂
And you did a fantastic job with the subtitling.

GuestThis is a screen grab of the main menu of the dvd me and newkate are working on. It’s just for fun at the moment and to hand around to friends, but if there is a demand, then we’ll ship it out to interested peeps for the cost of the dvd blank and postage (I’m not going to put it on ebay or anything silly like that).
I’m glad you liked the sub, the dvd version is much better though 🙂
